Why does it cost points to ask a question?

I have been answering questions for quite some time and have just posted my first question. I noticed that it cost 2 points for me to ask it. Why does it cost points to ask a question?

This will be my last question. Yes, I am greedy for points. Not that I have alot, I suppose its the competitive gamer in me.

You get the points back when you resolve the question. The point is to encourage people to select a best answer or call a vote for their question. Go ahead and ask all the questions you want, just be sure you pick a best answer in a couple of days!

Used to be they gave 5 points for asking a question and people were asking a lot of really stupid questions just for the points. Now it's a little better this way and has kept down the ridiculous ones. The points don't matter for anything anyway. It's all free and this whole site is just in a test phase.

I think it is to discourage people from constantly clogging up the board with stupid questions like, "How are you?" and "What are you doing right now?"
