Why are people in the US upset that a company in Dubai will run 6 seaports in the US?

The Republican majority leader has threatened to pass a bill barring a company in Dubai from running seaports in the northeast US. But the company in Dubai bought the interest from a company in Britain. Is the new outrage justifiable?

The security of the ports in question would still be the responsibility of the USA (Coast Guard, Customs, etc.) and the employees would still be US citizens (stevadores, etc.) Presently, port security begins overseas where cargo sent to the USA must be examined in foreign ports. The main concern may be that foreign nationals may become too familiar with our security measures and a few might abuse their knowledge (here rather than overseas).

No. The problem is rumors that our ports are being sold or are being turned over to UAE. This is not true. The truth is that the British company which currently runs the ports is being bought out by a company owned by UAE. The British company will continue to manage the ports. Security of the ports is not handled by the management company but by the coast guard and the national guard. The Discussion going on in Washington was simply to check the security risks if any posed by the UAE company and decide wether or not to back out of our contract with the British company. U.S. intelligence has found no reason why the UAE company buying out the British company poses a risk to U.S. Security. The United Arab Emerites is an ally and there is no evidence that the company involved has any connection to terrorists. Let's put this issue to rest shall we?

Can we really trust the Dubai Emirates to do this. I'm sorry but this is the same place where most of the 9/11 terrorists came from. Its dangerous to trust them. Also WHY is the Chimp administration so fired up on the idea? What's in if for them?

Remember 9/11 happened on the watch of the same folks that bungled that Hurricane Katrina. I think its a breech of trust.

The Democrats are also on board with the banning idea. The UAE has had finacial links to certian terriost groups and that concerns the congress. I am in no way advocating that the UAE has close ties to terriost groups, but in time or war it wouldn't be the smartest idea to allow this to happen. The UAE already runs ports in the middle east & orient. If they had our ports, where is the check & balance? If we could ensure that every container was to be x-rayed and checked that arrived on our shores, then there would probably not be a huge issue. Unfortuantly, only about 10% of the containers are checked. It is better to be safe than sorry.

Our customs still control movements in and out. It seems to make little difference who owns them. The issue with Dubai is the 9/11 attacks were funded by monies coming out of Dubai banks. They have also funded terrorists in the past. However they have denounced them realizing they have 16 years of oil left and started becoming a resort country.

The issue is their ties with terrorists. It would be like selling Afghanistan our airlines.

As far as Bush is concerned he maybe paying them back since Dubai gave him an oil rig contract many years ago to his company Arbustos. His company was failing and had no experience in oil rigs. Somehow he was able to get the contract above the major oil companies.

Because we dont feel comfortable trusting our ports to an Arab country that may or may not have ties to some terrorist groups.

because they will get more and more control of the usa and we lose our freedom.
