Can I be a good Christian without trying frantically to proselytize?
I find it amazing and frankly, somewhat disconcerting and intolerant that some fundamentalist Christian sects feel that their primary purpose is to bludgeon others as often as possible about how only their beliefs are right, and all others are wrong.
Does Christianity require "witnessing"?
Are you required to annoy everyone you meet?
Are prohibitions against proselytizing in the workplace discriminatory?
Doesn't this cause a conflict when multiple groups, each claiming that they and only they know the true correct path try to ALL convert everyone to their belief system?
I have to say I am very impressed with the answers of all stripes here. This is very good material. Thank you so much for your viewpoints. Please keep them coming!

People who spend time helping people who are sick, homeless, in prison, widows, orphans and hungry don't have to say another word.
In the workplace, we can best serve God attending to our duties, quietly doing the best for our employers.
I have never encountered one employer who desired me to stop and chat every time the spirit moved me!
Good Luck!

Proselytizing is NOT a requirement of a good Christian!!! In fact, I've known of pushing ideas about Christianity, onto someone, and it had the reverse effect. "Christians" should be very careful about doing this! Christ would not want His word to be pushed on anyone. A person has to accept it on their own, or it's nothing. I'm not saying that a Christian cannot encourage someone who either needs help in finding their answers, or that "conversations" shouldn't occur about this subject. I'm just saying that "proselytizing" is NOT the way to bring people to Chrisitanity. I believe that this type of "sales person" can sometimes be very self righteous, and that's why they push!!! I've had it happen to me...and faith is a very personal thing.
I've heard that " A person convinced against their will, is of the same opinion still!'

No matter what the subject, people are going to respect the listen to the delivery much better if it's not crammed down their throats. I'm not Christian, and I do not appreciate it when people just randomly ask me about religion and then proceed to tell me why theirs is what I should believe. I'm all for a discussion on religion, no doubt! But I'd prefer to be asked if I want to discuss, not told that I'm going to have to hear what the other person has to say about his religion. I'm very much against proselytizing and am a huge proponent of freedom of religion!

Yes Christians witness. But in my estimation, THEY DO IT BEST by demonstrating it in the way they live their lives, not by telling others how to live theirs.
Luke 10:4-5 is the story of Jesus sending out 72 followers to go ahead of him. "Don't take a purse, or a beggar's bag, or shoes; don't stop to greet anyone on the road. Whenever you go into a house, first say....."
These are the verses that Jehovah's Witnesses and Mormons use to justify their type of witnessing.
Does it work? Probably, because they keep doing it. Just all those people who send out spam mail. They keep doing it because it is profitable for them.

You know, you are either trying to attack Christians or understand them. If you are sincere, I'll be willing to discuss these issues with you by email without attacking each other or anything.
We can have a mature discussion about your questions if you'd like. You're coming off as a very offensive and ignorant of what Christianity stands for and teaches.
But if you just want to rant and rave, then go ahead and vent.
Let me know by putting your email address in this question and I will respond to you.

It's understandable that some who are Christian will try to recruit others. But it is forbidden by scripture.
"...Go not house to house" (Luke 10:4)
Christ does not need salesmen to recruit people for Christianity. In his own words: "No man can come to me, except the Father which has sent me draw him...." (John 6:44).

It's a matter of principle. What did Jesus come to do on earth? What did he teach his apostles to do? Did he encourage everyone to refrain from repeating what he preached? In the contrary.
Does it cause difficulty or controversy over groups? Yes. NO ONE wants to be told anything. Just like in His time!

From my point of view as a Christian, being a Christian means acknowledge Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour and then serve humanity. Don't forget to read the WORD as often as possible "BIBLE" in oder to keep yourself updated so that you won't be outdated!

Yes, you can.
"To believe in God or in a guiding force because someone tells you to is the height of stupidity. We are given senses to receive our information within. With our own eyes we see, and with our own skin we feel. With our intelligence, it is intended that we understand. But each person must puzzle it out for himself or herself."

the gospel of Christ is something to be shared, not pushed..I have never pushed anyone....most of the attacks come from non-christians toward me, not the other way around...but in the end, they are amazed....because I return love for hatred, and tolerance for intolerance...why because God is with me...and now they can see that....
