Some of the most useful tools for me are the Rhino Ramps that allow you to do oil changes a lot easier and a good floor jack. Jack stands are mandatory for safety. I'd never go under a vehicle that had it's wheels removed or jacked up off the ground (or on ramps) without placing jack stands under the critical support points of the car and chocking the wheels. Next is a good digital Volt Ohm Meter (VOM) (a $20 Sears VOM will do) for electrical work and learning how to use it. Of course a socket set is needed, and the new Sears Craftsman sets that have the sockets clearly labeled with the size make life a lot easier when your trying to get the job done. I like a set of box end wrenches because they give you good leverage getting nuts and bolts on and off the car. A vise grips is invaluable sometimes for all kinds of problems, and is a good one to carry in the car with you for road emergencies. Finally, I recommend spending a little more for good tools, because the cheap ones will let you down when you need them the most.

The Widgit is a far better tool than a doohickey.
Along with the Widgit, you can use the hoochiemaclevus and the thingamagig, that is all you need to fix anything.

I prefer Duck-tape and WD-40. If it moves and its not supposed to, duck-tape it. If it does not move and its supposed to WD-40 it.
