How can I tell who's on my wireless network?

There are a couple of ways to do it, but the easiest will be through your wireless router. Your router should have a "web" based setup and admin interface accessed by some reserve IP address like 192.168.0.1 from within your LAN. Within these pages it will depend on how your manufacturer set it up, but you can take a look at your log entries or your DHCP entries and what machines have been assigned an IP address. Go to your manufacturers website and search their support section. Some of them have step-by-step instructions and emulators so that you can see exactly how it's done without altering anything on your own system.

Answer above is the best way to find users who have Dynamic IP addresses, however..

If a user is smart, he/she would setup their computer to use a static IP address and manually connect to your router's IP address. There may be tools available to sniff your network (virtually by pinging all possible addresses for a response) to find the static clients but it's not an easy task.

First thing you should do it setup WEP encryption on your network, but that can be easily broken since WEP keys are sent as clear text over the wireless signals, and one can use a wireless packet sniffer to get it. But that will at least keep most casual wireless "moochers" away. Another thing is to monitor your bandwidth. Go to http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest and see what your typical connection speed is. If things start to get sluggish, go run the test again. If the speed is greatly decreased yet you know your computers aren't doing any heavy downloading or anything, it's possible someone's using your network. Follow the steps provided by previous users to detect any additional DHCP clients that you don't recognize. If it's still a problem, best bet would be to change the router's local IP address and change the WEP key. Best thing you can do for now.

You will go crazy trying to completely secure your wireless network, as it's nearly impossible. If it really concerns you that greatly, switch back to a hard-wired network. Unfortunately that's the only way to absolutely 100% remove any possible threats.

if using windows XP/2k start -> run -> cmd c:>ipconfig /all if using *nix open shell # ifconfig this will display the name of all properly installed network adapters. and the IP addresses they are assigned to for weak signal (can't connect) you may need to check your wifi router for these possibilities: 1. encryption type (are you using WEP or WPA?) some old wifi adapters (from your nephew's PC) can only use WEP and WPA-personal. you might be using WPA-enterprise 2. is your nephews belkin router properly configured for your network? check to see if the belkin router is acting "as a bridge" or wifi access point 3. 200 feet could be stretching it too far (unless you have something like linksys GX routers), consider adding a "wifi repeater" somewhere in between the 2 points. good luck.

Open internet explorer then in address bar type in 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 . Then go to attached devices or something like that. Oh yeah and you will need to log in to the router so you might wanna know the password and username. Default for netgear is I think is username = admin password = password. Don't know default for others.

Please see above..this would be the correct procedure. you can see all computers connected to your network..you really should add encryption to it..you can also block the amount of available addresses to the router
