Bison or buffalo?

Those in america are buffalos or bisons? as far as I know they were bisons, but the movie "Dance with wolves" set in the doubt again....

    They are technically bison. But as a second definition on dictionary.com for buffalo it says 1.b.The North American Bison. So I guess so many years of saying the wrong word and movies like Dances with Wolves have caused the two words to be synonymous.

    They are bison. Their Genus species name is Bison bison. I think they just put it in the movie like that because most people call them buffalo and perhaps they didn't want to confuse the viewers.
