RAM is basically a temporary storage area for your processor. The more ram you have, the more the CPU can store and access at the same time, without having to send requests to your hard drive which is much slower. So the more RAM you have, the better your CPU is able to function, and therefore the faster your computer will function for you.

Ram is important for speed but also your processor speed, video card and bus speed are factors also. So just adding RAM to an existing PC may not fix your speed problems.
