Owls have various meanings mythologically depending on the culture. However, there are some common threads:

Owls are symbolic of the wisdom/experience/suffering triad.

    (1) Owls are symbolic of wisdom. Athene, the Greek goddess of wisdom (among other things), had as her totem animal the Bubo, or Owl, and to this day in folklore the owl is the wisest of animals. Even in the old Tootsie Roll commercial, the Owl is the sage consulted to decipher life's riddles, which is an ancient mythic pattern.

    (2) Owls are psychopomps--escorts of spirits between the world of the Living and the world of the Dead. Other psychopomp birds are ravens, crows, and whippoorwills. This underscores their role in terms of the suffering and experience dimension of the triad.

    (3) Owls are divine messengers. Think not just of Athene's Bubo but also of Norse and Algonquian tales of owl messengers.

    (4) Owls are associated with witch's knowledge, good and bad. There is the Chicano Cuento "El baile de los tecolotes," "The Dance of the Owls," which tells the story of brujas (witches) turning themselves into owls and dancing spirally in the sky using a magic powder. Owls are one tradition European familiar for witches (a tradition that continues to the present day in Harry Potter novels, but is in fact at least 2500 years old...)

I think the mythological corpus would suggest that owls represent a side of reality that may be beyond good or evil, beyond good or bad omens, in the realm of experience as such and the wisdom of suffering and adversity.

Owls do not represent omens; they are simply nocturnal birds that have a tendency to make people superstitious because of their unusual screeches and hissing sounds. In fact, owls are beneficial because they remove unwanted rodents from a person's property. Sometimes people associate them with wisdom because of their large, supposedly studious, eyes. Owls are mostly harmless birds unless you bother them, but they do not have special powers or anything else that will either help or harm a person. Hope that helps!

It depends on the culture. A lot of Native American cultures believed that owls were omens or death, or evil sorcerers in animal form. They'd probably be more positive from a European perspective, since they're supposed to be associated with wisdom.

Owls are symbols of wisdom. An owl is the symbol of Athena. Some believe owls to be a bad sign. However that is just superstition. Owls are represenative of age knowledge and wisdom. As well as solitary watchers of the night.

Do not believe in omens! They're superstitious, irrational beliefs! An owl or any other bird visiting your front porch does NOT bring any harm - unless it is infected with Bird Flu...

Depends on the culture. Some see them as bad omens, some as good.

It all depends on what cultural tradition you prefer.

In Wicca, an owl totem is used to represent divination, truth, visions, wisdom, and serves as a link between the worlds.
