Which should I get, Russian Blue, Abyssinian, or ??, for my 4-year old girls. (Please read my details)?

I've checked out the common breeding sites, magazine sites (like Cat Fancy), and some other forums. I'm interested in hearing from actual owners on the pluses/minuses for Russian Blues (current favorite), Abyssinians, or another breed that has a good temperament around young children.

Update:

One more important item of note that I neglected in my original post, my wife tends to be a bit allergic to cat dander, so please add that item into your answers. Anyone, feel free to change your answers, if you need to.

Abys and Russian Blues can be very shy. Maine Coon cats are usually very friendly, and Siamese can be very tolerant, almost doglike (though they can also be temperamental).

Why a purebred? There are SOOOO many wonderful moggies (mixed breeds) out there that need good "forever homes". A lot of moggies even look like purebreds. I have a little male who was found in some bushes, and he looks just like a purebred Siamese, even though I'm SURE there's something else in there-- you don't just find purebred kittens in the bushes!

Go visit a shelter and meet several kittens, or even adult cats. Ask the staff which residents are good with children. Most shelter kitties are already spayed or neuteres and even have vaccines, so that would be one less thing for you to have to deal with. You also won't have the worry of an "OOPS!" litter! You'll be doing your small but important part in helping the homeless pet population, and teaching your girls about good responsible pet guardianship at the same time.

I have two Russian Blues. I've had them for years, since before my kids were born. A lot of cats get jealous when a new baby comes along, and the baby starts getting all the attention, but not these two cats. From the day I brought my babies home from the hospital, the cats seemed to love them. When the baby would cry, the cats would want to rub their faces on the baby's head to try and comfort him. They have had their whiskers and fur pulled by my kids as toddlers, been tripped over, stepped on, and they've never hissed or raised a paw to my kids. My two boys are 13 and 6 now, and we still have the cats. They've always gotten along great together. They are extremely affectionate cats. They love lots of attention and are happiest when in someone's lap, getting snuggled. One of them is in my lap while I'm writing this LOL. So, if my two cats are any indication on the temperament of Russian Blues in general, you really can't go wrong with them.

i have had a few different kind of cats in my past but for some reason there is more people with allergies to cats than dogs. Plus my dad's new girlfriend before i moved out to my own place had my cats put down so i kinda got mad about that and am affraid to get another one but i would say a pitbull just me but they are not like they are made out to be it is all in the raising of them. My brother had a siemeze i cant spell but oh well i think that what it was anyway that would put a hurt on any animal no my brother didnt raise it that way he took it from the people cause he did not like the way they treated the poor little guy. as far as the cat goes read up some and talk to your local vets office and dont be affraid to go to the animal shelters and get a pet they are all in need of good homes i running out of room at my place got 14 dogs not just had a litter of ten today.

We had a Maine Coon Cat mix who was very sweet tempered. He was a bit of a pain as an adolescent, very rambunctious, but loved the family and was very good with my baby and toddler (at the time) He was never a problem at the vet's office, staff loved him.

My husband has a mild allergy and was never bothered by him, but my nephew was. He was a longer hair version, but if we washed him once a season and kept him brushed most people could be around him and in our house with no problem. Good luck

Before my sisters and I were born, my mother had a Russian Blue named Lily. She was just about the sweetest kitty! My mom never allowed us to play too rough with her or pick her up until we were big enough to properly cradle her. She died when I was about 12 (24 now) and I still remember how she would drool and purr when she was happy! I've only owned Domestic Short hairs since her, but I would love to get another Russian Blue one day.

If you want a purebred, buy a mag called Cats USA. It has tons of listings of different breeders, all breeds. A lot of them you can e-mail & ask questions. They will know best which breed would be for a child.
