Why would a dog "destuff" a toy?

Our last dog, "Katie," had this wierd, but funny thing she used to do. Whenever we bought her a new stuffed toy (usually from a resale shop, she didn't care), it was only a matter of time before she made a tear in it and gleefully remove as much stuffing as she could. Our home, for the most part, was filled with destuffed "babies," as we called them.

What instinct do you think drove this behavior. For the record, she was a Keeshond.

Update:

To Mother of ALL Chaos:

Yes, Katie is no longer with us. The toys didn't killed; She died of illness. We all loved her and miss her.

Good News: We have a new dog who is quickly becoming as much a member of the family as Katie was.

She was just pretending to de-gut a wild animal. Most dogs do that... Just living out ancient fantasies, like people do with violent video games. lol

It's nothing bad and it's not instinct they just like to play with the thing and unfortunately for the stuffed toys they just don't make them strong enough for the tough...

Source(s): I have had dogs do this as well

I agree with the squeaky inside of it.Our lab tore up stuffed toys as fast as we got them, then we realized that if they didn't have a squeaker inside, she didn't tear them up.

it could be sje's just playful or it could mean something else. I have a Mastiff and she has hip dysplasia. Whn she gets sore, she grabs her stuffed toys and shreds them to pieces. She doesnt eat anything else or destroy anything else., but her stuffed toys sure get it.

Oh dear - why is this story in the past-tense? I hope her gutting habit wasn't the cause of her demise! Yes - I think its a natural habit. My basenji has the unfortunate desire to gut my couch!

My lab does the same thing. I guess its just a dog thing. Im trying to teach her to clean her mess, she can get one load in the trash, but thats about it.LOL

  • if it has a squeeky toy inside of it...they try to get it out..my dogs do it also..then when they get it out...they don't want the toy anymore :( bad dog ;)

My dog does this too. I think that it's partly instinct.

They're "gutting" it. Also probably because it's fun.

its mostly prey behaivor. they act like they toys are prey, and are trying to "kill" it. my rottie and husky did the same thing, especially to toys with squeakers in them.
