lousy tap water?
I have tap water that is very high in calcium and lime ( turns my stainless steel sink white just running the faucet) My question is this. I have been using bottled spring and distilled water for water changes , but it is starting to get costly to do it. I have tried aging the tap water , but with the high levels of calcium and lime in the water the tank water becomes cloudy and milky the next day. Does anyone no of a water treatement (besides aquasafe) that will neutralize these chemicals in my tap water?
I also have a britta filter on the tap.
I live in a apartment complex so a filtration system is out of the question-don't think my landlord will spring for it. I am not runnign water high it does that white stuff just turning on the faucet with the britta filter. I do have no more algae I usually put in there and the accu clear suggestion sounds good to me
Thanks for all your answers. Recently my apartment complex had to install some new pipes in my building and some of the others due to a hot water problem (the complex is 30 yrs old so the white stuff must have been acumilation from all those years) I used the water yesterday for my water change without the britta filter. The water is no longer white Yipeeee! I then added Aqua safe and proper ph by jungle and now my water is crystal clear

Do not use filtered water. Filtered water like "BRITA" adds minerals and chemical components that will kill your fish with prolonged use. Go to your local pet store chain and buy a Freshwater Master Test Kit around $20.00 dollars. In it you will find all the stuff you need to fix and maintain your aquarium water. Mine is made by the company below.

I have the same problem.. very hard water... comes out of the tap at pH 8... I used to mix it with purchased RO water from a local water dealer at a 1 gal tap/5 gal RO mix...
However, I have discovered African Ciclids... They like very hard water and I don't have to mix in pure water... My tank runs at about 8.4 pH and they are thriving. All of the species I have originated from Lake Malawi. You have to watch which species you put together and generally you want to have a single male with a harem for each species.
One tank I have for example, has Pseudotropheus Zebras (they changed the scientific name and I can't remember the new one off of the top of my head), Labiotropheus, and Kenyi. Be sure to use lots of rocks and make caves...

well the only things i know is to get a filter pitcher as well as ur faucet.. then try the pH balance to neutralize the calcium. they should also make a calcium neutralizer as well... if any of that doesnt work then ur going to have to stick with buying water....

try using spring water you can get by the gallon at places like Wal-Mart. its only .69 cents a gallon. or buy a filter that goes right over your tap. good luck!

it is conpleatly normal for it to tint white just dont run the water that high and it also could be buildup in your faucet... maybe its time to get some new pipes. <good luck!

try algaefix. its for ponds but it gets my tank stabilized. as for cloudy water a few drops of accu-clear will have it crystal within a few hours.

go to an army surplus store and pick up some of those tablets that purify drinking water. that should work.
