What things are just inherently funny?

Death. Especially death resulting from prolonged illness.

Individual human suffering always gets a laugh, unless it's you who trips, falls on his face, sharts (farts and sht happens), pie in the face, etc.

Situational humor is also very funny:

Any unusual behaviour at "formal settings"--farting in church, making out in the elevator with other passengers watching, grinding the bride at the wedding reception dance, etc.

And then there is the primate humor,

Monkeys acting like humans will always be around!

It is subjective. It depends on the actual event and the circumstances that could make it either funny or pitiful.
