They're both exceptional books but I find '1984' to be one of the most powerful and compelling novels I've ever read. George Orwell was an exceptionally gifted writer (much more so than Ray Bradbury) with the ability to translate his words and ideas into (often terrifying) worlds that the reader can actually feel and touch. Beyond that, with both '1984' and 'Animal Farm' he accurately portrayed a future world that we can actually see represented in both a historical context and today. Just a brilliant mind producing brilliant works that none but the ignorant can fail to appreciate and be educated by. Orwell may have been the most influential writer of the last century. Just awesome.

Both are great books, but I would have to go with 1984, because it emphasizes the totalitarian society more than Fahrenheit 451. In Fahrenheit 451, the books are burned to reduce the influence of dangerous thinking, and the people become mindless zombies, not caring about interaction with other people. In 1984, all characters act for the good of Big Brother. When Winston's friend gets betrayed by his son for muttering against Big Brother in his sleep, he feels guilty. The government became so adept at controlling their citizens, that no one questions what the government does, since it turned them into mindless zombies, rather than Fahrenheit 451, where it just happens because of apathy. Winston is forced into his society in Room 101, he doesn't accidently find his way there.

    I think Fahrenheit 451. I like Bradbury.

Very difficult to say. Both are among my favorite books. I'd say for me personally, both are equally compelling. Have you read Brave New World? This Perfect Day? THX1138?

1984 is depressing. I ran to the library and located some fluffy popcorn fiction to examine after examining that unhappy tale approximately one guy who have been given knotted up with a tousled authorities.

Bush hasn't started burning books yet. Big Brother is spying on us, and spouting feel-good rhetoric. 1984 gets my vote.
