    Yes. It's based on the true story. The book is called "The Great Escape" by Paul Brickhill, who was a POW in Sagan, Germany, at a camp called Stalag Luft III. Although Brickhill was a POW, he did not exit the tunnel escape with the 76 other guys on 24 March 1944.

    Some parts of the movie are very accurate to what happened in the real event. However, no Americans escaped in the tunnel. And the idiotic Steve McQueen motorcycle scene was thrown in to pacify Queenie's monstrous ego which wouldn't let him appear in the film without his getting to ride his motorcycle.

    (One of the other respondents might be surprised to learn that books can be either fiction or non-fiction!)

    the escape attempt is real but what they did after was ake there was americans involved at first but they were moved before they broke out there was details left out like how they got compasses in which were hidden in clothes but they were still using that trick so the army asked would they not use that in the fil
