What is the significance of the Palace of Green Porcelain in H.G. Wells' The Time Machine?

It served many purposes. For starters it helped emphasize how far humanity had fallen, both the eloi and the murlocks. Here is a massive structure of such sound engineering and design that it has withstood the ages and yet the successors of those who constructed it know next to nothing about it's purpose or construction. I think it's also telling that amidst all the technological wonders the palace contains including weapons, the time traveler when threatained simply rips a level off a complex machine and uses it as a club.

I wish I could remember more but it's been years since I read that last and the specifics are starting to get hazy.

I've just recently read that book because I will do my final paper about fantasy in the Victorian era. The significance could be that art may last for many,many years after its creators have gone. The tenderness and the people's way of being still survives after thousands of years of evolution. It can also be like a reminder of times past or it may be an element in accordance with one of the traveling novels'rules-meaning that the traveler must find something in the place he goes that reminds him of home, an element alike the ones back in his own time.By the way,I really liked the book.I was looking for the new movie that was made a few years ago.Do you happen to know a site where I can download it from? limewire doesn't have it.
