Whenever your job has to do with flying whether your an officer or not, you need to be experienced in swimming. I think part of the training is called "Aircrew Survival Training." Start learning how to swim now because a majority of the training will be held underwater.

When I was in the Marine Corps. They attempted to teach some of the new Marine how to swim if they were having difficulties. I'm not sure if that is the policy for the Navy or Marines now because I have been out of that branch of service for all most 13 years now. Air Crew School will train you in some aspects of what is required, BUT you need practice. Find a pool that is near you and start trying to do laps and also try to practice holding your breath (Breath control) because some of the things you will be required to do will task your abilities to swim and work both above and below water.

Best friend of mine was a MAD boom operator on a P3 Orion (that's a turbo-prop powered submarine hunter). He spent 12 years in and was stationed all over the place, mostly HQ'd out of Jacksonville FL, but also a tour in Hawaii. He loved it, until he topped out in his rate and they refused to promote him to Chief Petty Officer (E-7). They tried to get him to stay in by dangling money in front of him, but by that time he was sick of doing CPO work for PO1 pay so he left.
Oh, one other thing...he was on deployment quite a bit. It wrecked his marriage. His wife was screwing the neighbor while he was out scouring the oceans for Russian and Chinese submarines. Bad mojo right there.
