Everyone seems to say the world thinks America is a bad country. Why do so many people want to emigrate here?

I don't understand. If this is such a bad place with a bad government, bad culture, then why do people risk their lives to come here? (Like the 22 Chinese who loaded themselves in a shipping crate and landed in Seattle a couple days ago)

Although some people say America is a "bad" country, people still want to come to America because it has more opportunities for them than the country that they live in.

The reason people say that American is a bad place to be,is because of all the illegal aliens that have snuck in to the U.S.,and made a mess out of our beautiful America. Every year there are more and more illegals coming into our United States, and the more that comes, the more that tries to change our Beautiful America. It is so sad now a days to drive through different towns and states, and you see more illegal aliens, whether they are Mexicans,Indians from overseas,or wherever. You can go through some towns and the streets look more like Little Mexico, than the real Mexican towns and streets.Plus now everything you see that is sold in stores has tohave both english and spanish written on it.American is the land of oppurtunity, but at what costs to us Americans? You tell me!!!!

People think America is a bad country because of the people...but they come here(to America) because we get more rights and freedom then they do (freedom of speech, right to vote, right to bear arms) and because our government is a republic (based on democracy) its different from theirs cause their government might be communist or something like that....and its not the whole world that thinks America is bad......i watched this on Oprah once during class and in those countries they went to "interview" those people there don't really think America is a bad place....its only a handful of people.....

The people who think the US is bad are not necessarily from the countries where people want to emigrate to the US. I think it is more the countries in Europe and, of course, the Middle East who have bad things to say about the US. You get more people wanting to emigrate from Mexico and Central America, I think. It's because they are on the same continent and so it is easier for them to get to the US. Maybe they would rather go to New Zealand or Australia, but that's harder for them to get to. Anyways, of course, because the US is better off economically than Mexico and Central America, so of course they want to go there to make a better life for their families. I am USA/Canadian (dual citizenship) and living in Canada. I love the US and Canada, both. The USA gives off a feeling of arrogance to other countries and that is what puts the people of other countries off about the USA. If the USA could exercise a little bit more modesty, it would go a long way to endearing themselves to other countries. Americans seem to think that other countries want to be just like the USA and that is wrong - they don't want that at all. As well, even a lot of the people who emigrate, legally or illegally, to the USA from Mexico and Central America, don't necessarily really want to go there to give up their home countries - they just want to go there to make enough money to give their families a better life. They will likely accept American citizenship, but I bet you anything lots (if not most) of them would not accept US citizenship if it meant they had to give up their citizenship to their mother countries. I know that if I were to travel to Europe or most other countries in the world, I would use my Canadian passport, rather than my American one, because I would be much better accepted and treated. Sorry, even though I love the USA still, that's reality.

There is a lot of poverty in the world and people like to escape it.. I would not emigrate to America as I value my freedom too much and where I live, Australia we are much better off then America where I lived 8 years. Every time I visit my American relations I am shocked by the poverty and degree of ignorance, the blatent racism, and the widespread acceptance of blind militarism, & the destruction of the environment.

Christianity is becoming illegal, Gay marriage is illegal but abortion, execution and casualties are allowed. Cops are crooked as hell, The US is still in the great depression and owes trillions of dollars to other countries. The US drone kills innocent people from innocent countries. 70% of Americans are racist and communist and the idiot Americans elected a retarded president who has never confirmed where he was born.

    It's a very nice country.....while you're dead.

As "bad" as we are, we are much better than any other nation in the world. We are the worlds ONLY superpower, economically and militarily. Whatever "beef" they have with America to call us BAD, is usually just based on politics.

Getting ahead financially and being able to send money home to loved ones and eventually (in some cases) go back home to retire.

Lots of people hate their jobs too, but they still go. Why?
