Why are they "phasing" out the old faithful floppy?

could it be that these devices do not allow for o/s interference before being readable/writable. They're exceptionally handy at cracking through ajar windows.

Alas, soon all machine's will be infected with a boot sector (mine's been infected twice, no scanner finds it) virus that screws around with the floppy driver and all data on floppies thus forcing the zombiod populace to arrive at the pre-digested idea that floppies are usless little devices that bring more heartache than good and hence must be erradicated. does anyone at all have a working brain?

the reason is cost computer companies make very little profit on desktops and the floppy isnt used that often (usb flash drives are the latest way to carry data from machine to machine)eliminating a floppy saves a few dollars, I personally install a floppy when i build a new computer cause there are alot of programs that boot from floppy but capacity wise I use a USB flashdrive cheap durable high capacity storage

Besides the fact that they are tortuously slow (and noisy) and have almost useless capacity, I think the main problem with floppies is the physical durability of them. The metal part on the cover is easily bent. I have had countless floppies over the years just not work due to some sort of failure. I certainly wouldn't trust them for much...old and hardly faithful.

I am not sure what you are saying about a boot sector virus. From what I know, I thought they were spread via floppies. I disable my floppy seek in the BIOS so I don't deal with them much any more at all. Most modern motherboards will soon support USB drive booting so will replace the floppy altogether.

You must resolve. You SEEM to be saying that we are wrong for thinking that they are useless, but you offer no arguement. They hold very little information, as compared to today's media. They are reletively slow to read/write. They are easily erased with magnetic fields. They are easily damaged by dust. They decompose over time and become corrupted. They are also easily damaged my force. The only thing CD roms have to offer as resolution are storage space and magnets have no affect on them, and they cannot become corrupted.

Soild state storage media (e.g. thumb drives, etc.) offer a fix to all of these problems. They can be reformatted an unlimited number of times. They can hold growing amounts of space. Formats are not as much of an issue, as they are simply an electron positioning, computer controled devices. Magnets do not affect them, they are relatively resistant to heat, and canot be damaged permenantly by dust or water.

I did however find it quite useful when my boot sector virus changed the ID number of my hard drive, causing the computer to not recognize its existance. I had to boot up using a floppy. CDs and SSD's don't offer this capability, as all the drivers exist on the main partition of the hard drive.

That is the only problem i've run into, and it's minor, not that we have the autodetect quality of boot sectors to recognize hard drives.

    So what's your arguement?

When i put a system together these days i don't bother with a floppy drive unless the customer asks for one.

even though it is superior in many ways to cd's, the bottom line is cds are now cheaper than floppies.

Yeah the thing is that, the computer companies are trying to get us to buy CD Burners for those things...thus we need to buy CD-RW's to burn more than once

it only holds 1.44 MB of data. a cd-r holds 700MB of data and are cheap
