Nowadays there is NO reason not to have another hard drive. YOu can buy an 80GB drive for about $50, way cheaper than a lot of software. You can use windows or get a free program to clone the drive.
I use the full version of Casper XP to do my drives, their trial version should suffice if you juust have one partition.

I have had a fewdisasters in my time but I don't sweat it because I just boot to my clone drive and copy it back to the main hard drive.

use system restore to create a restore point when the systems running properly. Use a virus killer and like it says on the other answers use an adware killer. But the best advice I can give you is buy a program called "norton go back" its the best program I have ever used, when your computer messes up you can restore it to an earlier time (but it's better than sys restore) I think its on the Norton System works disc.

many options:
1. prevention: get good virus and firewall software. more importantly, educate yourself about how virii get into your computer.
2. backups: almost all computers now can backup either on the current hard drive or through any number of dvd's/cd's. you should also regularly set recovery points through system recovery wizard.
3. emergencies: if you are extremely paranoid, you should get a fast, large drive or drive system, back up your computer, and then store it in a fireproof/waterproof safe.

Get all the virus protection, adware protection, and make sure not to use all your memory. You can back up your things on cd or dvd with the programs stated above.
