A loudmouth drunk who was a hell of a ball player.

The next victim of Barry Bonds. The Babe was an over weight, alcoholic, womanizer. To my knowledge he never used performance inhancing drugs so I guess I consider him a step above a cheater such as Bonds.

for some reason, the sultan of swat always comes into my head. I mean, in all honesty (in response to the article), I don't really care if Bonds passes him in the record books. Babe Ruth was a great baseball player, still is, regardless of his color. When I think of Great Baseball Players, too, I think of Jackie Robinson. Color is regardless
If Bonds does pass the records, great for him. All steroid issues aside, he's still pretty dang good. I mean, look at all these other guys who are involved in the steroid scandal. They did not break Ruth's record, did they? No. Which means Bonds has the raw talent to get there, and if he's juiced, whatever. I mean, don't get me wrong, I care. That makes a big difference in the whole record thing.
Why it doesn't matter to me much is that Bonds is a pretty bad person in general. Great Baseball players to me are guys that can perform on and off the field. Great atheletes in general, actually. The guys who accept an award and credit god or family first, guys who are actually nice to people like the paparazzi or regular fans, guys who help out not just for press but because they want to, those are real atheletes. Because while people like Bonds work out, other guys help out. Bonds can pass the record twice if he really wants to. But I personally won't remember him as a great player
To sumarize, what do I think of Babe Ruth? he was one of the great players of his time, of our time. But as time goes on, he will diminish, while his record is wiped out by guys on "natural" enhancements and such.
I think of the Sultan of Swat, the Great Bambino, the downfall of Boston, etc. A signer of autographs, a man adored by millions, a charitable person. He wasn't the greatest of guys, but he was the greatest of atheletes. And unless alcohol and tobacco are enhancements, he did it by himself.
