Culture Question about Gay Men?
Hello all. Just trying to do some research for a play I am in called "Boys in the Band". It's set in the 60's, so my question is why do gay men call each other Mary? It's a term of endearment, so I'm curious as to where it got it's start.

i think it has something to do with gay men refering to each other as queens too i think queen and mary are short for queen mary or drag queen

its a term that was used by gay men in the 60s endearment i think

SORRY. but i'm a gay man , and never have heard the term "Mary!" "Girlfriend" yes, "Mary" no! maybe it was used along time ago before my time but i'm over 30 and never have heard "Mary"

I know it was a form of affection towards the other person, as to how it got started i havent been able to find anything on the net and I honestly dont know.

well i donno but i think its fun as st8 ppl don't know well most st8 ppl and gays can talk to each other with out exposer to st8 ppl well i dono good luck with your play
