There's this audition for a short indie movie in May and I'm one of the 8 actors but I think I have a problem.
One: I have no acting experience whatsoever.
Two: I get the jitters at auditions.
Three: The part I want to play has me speaking Chinese but I can't even say a single word of Chinese.
Four: I have no idea what I'm going to do at this audition or how do I calm down. I'm starting to get nervous.
Question: How am I supposed to calm down? How do I get ready for the role? If playing a side role - what do they look for? What do casting directors usually look for in actors? Looks; talent?
I'm really spoilt for choice here... so I'll have to let the public decide! I'd like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who answered this question! I'll keep those tips in mind! Thanks~!

One: Not necessarily an obstacle, but if you plan on seriously pursuing acting, think about taking a couple of acting classes. Not only will they help you with acting techniques, but they will help you with some of your other issues.
Two: Everyone does. If they say they don't, they're liars. One of my actresses (who is a fabulous performer and vocalist) throws up before every audition. It's natural to be nervous. You just need to act like you're not and be confident of your reading (if you're using sides) or monologue.
Three: Not an issue. They will/should bring in a coach to help with pronunciation/accent. If it will make you feel better, take a look for some Chinese pronunciation websites...rent Serenity the movie and be secure in the knowledge that none of the actors in there who occasionally had to spew Chinese had a clue as to what they were saying.
Four: find out if they are doing readings from the script (sides) or if you need to have a prepared monologue. Most directors are looking for someone who isn't "Acting". They are looking for someone who feels natural in the role (this is different than being a natural for the role...it's making the director think that "sure, hand me a quantum-deconstructor and I can take it apart and put it back together" whether you actually can or not).

Sometimes for the sake of a dream you have to take a chance. When you take this chance, you may make a mistake. But then, you may come out having learned something new, and/or improving your personal self.
We are similar in some ways.I love acting, but I get the jitters on stage.Trying to figure out how to make myself less nervous, makes me even more nervous. When I get Nervous(especially when it comes to acting)I put my mind somewhere else. Most of the time it is with the character I am playing. This helps me a lot because everything I have is going into my character so my emotions are more genuine. To calm down I normally think...is this worth getting all worked up over? The worst that can happen is that you won't get the part. Even if you don't get the part you will come from the audition with tons of experience, possibly for your next audition.

well im not a proffesional but i have been in some major films such as the ringer but before auditions or even filming i try to relax and mabey stretch or take a bubble bath. casting directors look for someone who is themselves and isnt afraid of what they beleive in. for looks it doenst really matter what you look like to get into the acting business it takes there personality. Even though you said you have had no experience most actors and actresses havent when they first start off but you can get better rolls in movies and shows if you take acting classes below i listed a website that has tons of auditions just click on the city you live in or by and then tv and films and radio and it has a ton of auditions posted daily.

haha I know how it is, its a scarey thing, but you have to understand the casting directors are human too, dont make them like this higher being, they want you to get the job as much as you want it. Just stay calm, its ok, dont dwell on it so much, and just go in and do it the best to your abilities. and if you dont get it, its ok, keep trying a lot of actors go a while before even getting a call back. just know what you have to do, go in and execute it to the best of your ability. read the script so you know the basics, its ok if you adlib, they just want to see that character come alive from you, they need to believe you, well dont worry about it so much, they'll be many more auditions to come, and good luck hope i helped some
