Is it possible to separate the audio and video in an .avi file?

Today I spend the longest time copying a DVD to my hard drive so I can put it on my iPod. When it was finally done, I tried playing it on my pc and the audio is totally out of sync with the video. To be specific, the audio of the film starts while the video is still showing the menu, so the audio ends up being about a minute ahead of the video through the entire thing.

Is there some software I could download that will isolate the audio and video so I can use Movie Maker or something to put it back together the right way?

If not, can anyone recommend some new DVD ripping software that might avoid this problem?

    Yes

For AVI, DivX, XviD use Virtualdub, first select File->Open Video File to open the video and to separate the audio select File->Save WAV. If it's a DivX or ASF you maybe want to convert the audio to WAV PCM then select Uncompressed PCM under Audio->Compression and be sure to select Audio->Full Processing before saving. To separate only the video select Audio->No audio and Video->Direct stream copy and last File->Save AVI to save the video.

    Hi,

Yes you can split the audio from video, and replace it or sync it in. But this is normally done only for making your own dvd's. When it splits from a copied dvd movie, it is time consuming to bring it back to sync. The fault lays with your ripping program and you are best to re-rip it again than to try to sync it. Alternatively try another ripping program. Unfortunately I use a mac and would only be able to recommend mac software for you, which is obviously no good to you.

Adobe Premier lets you seperate audio and video, but I don't know how effective this would be for your problem, and Premier is pretty expensive.

  • yes use virtualdub (its free)
