Why do so many people type in illegible netspeak?

I can understand abbreviating some words and phrases, like "BRB" for "be right back" but why do people need to turn words like "Why" into "y" or "are" into "r"? Is it really that hard to type 2 more letters?

Supposedly, it's faster. It's also 'in' - how many people do you see using full sentences on AOL?

It has gotten ridiculous lately, though. It's terrible on my brain.

if you are using text messaging pagers i can understand the need to shorten words, but there is no need to do it in this forum or in email.

you have to wonder if the users of abbreviated words would be able to get jobs where they are required to write in english?

They spend too much time online. So much time that when they have to actually write something out with a pencil on paper they STILL use "r" and "u" and "y" as words.

These people wish to drive me insane by jumbling together words. It's working.

I don't know but it is one of my huge pet peeves. I consider people who can't spell lazy and/or stupid. Both of my parents were English teachers, what can I say?

    Agreed,

Now what are they going to do with that third of a second that they saved?

    Because they are lazy.
