Three guys purchase a hotel room together......?

....the room cost $30, each guy pays $10. The hotel manager relized the room is only $25. He gives 5 dollar bills to the bell hop and sends him to the room to return the money. The bell hop decides he can't divide the $5 to 3 men equally, so he gives them each $1 and puts $2 in his pocket. If each guy paid $10 and got $1 back, that means they each actually paid $9. $9 x 3 guys= $27 plus the $2 in the bell hop's pocket so where is the other dollar?

We really don't know the answer. Do you?

The other dollar is actually "hidden" in the cost of the room.

Since the final room cost was $25 it means that each man's cost was really $25/3 = $8.333333333333333333

The bellhop gave them each back $1, therefore each man's tally was $9.3333333333333 . If you multiply $9.33333333333 * 3 it is equivalent to $28. The bellhop has the other $2. Hence the other dollar was always there, it's just hidden by how the scenario is phrased.

The problem with (your problem) is that there is no need for 27 + 2 to equal 30.

Think of it this way: each guy pays $10, now the manager has $30. He gives $5 to the bell hop, who distributes $3 to the guys and takes $2.

In this case, the amount each one paid is $9 * 3, which is $27. However, the manager has _$25_ now, not $30! He have back $5 to the bell hop, right? So adding the bell hops $2 makes no sense. In fact, if you subtract the $2 from the $27 that the guys overpaid, you get $25, which is what the manager has.

Nice word play. There is no other dollar. The trick is that after the room price was lowered to $25 and the money returned you keep trying to add up to $30.

    Initially $10 x 3 = 30.

    After price dropped ($9 x 3) - $2 bell hop = $25.

Do not read into this more than you need. They paid 30, the room was 25, they got back three and the bellhop kept 2.

This makes 30. The fact that they paid 27 and the bell boy 2 making 29 is not relevant. They paid 27 minus the 2 the bell boy kept is 25. the 27 is actually extra information.

Well, it helps to put the problem in the form of a simple algebraic equation. If you do this, you will find that there is no "other dollar", because we are no longer talking about a room charge of $30 - it is $25 instead. Each man paid $9, adding up to $27: subtract the $2 "tip" from this and you get $25. This is demonstrative of how what seems to be the obvious way of doing things can sometimes be very wrong, and that children need to be taught critical thinking skills. Grammar, spelling and punctuation are helpful as well.

The hotel room costs 25 dollars. each man paid 8.3333333 for the room. But it is a reapeating decimal, since in our money system it is impossible to 8 dollars and 33 and a third cents one person paid 34 cents, while the others paid 33. 8.33 + 8.33 + 8.34 = 25 + 3 (dollars they would've spent if they paid 30) + 2 ( for the bellhop) It is impossible that each man paid the same amount because of the repeating decimal. In you'r formula you would have to subtract the 2 dollars from the 9 x 9. This is because each man paid nine dollars, and the bell hop's tip is included in that nine dollars.

i did no longer quite understand anybody else's solutions so i desperate to purpose: costs 25 yet they each and each paid thirty... fake they meant to pay 25 the completed time yet they overpaid as a results of fact they only had 10 dollar costs and that they've been looking forward to alter 10+10+10=25 so 30=25 then eliminate the two that the bellhop took so 28=25 then supply lower back a million dollar to each and each individual so as that they only spent 9 money each and each so 25=25 (I form of get it even though it continues to be bugging me!) now permit's artwork lower back any opposite direction: 25 is how a lot the room costs 25+2= room+tip 27=money the three paid all jointly 27+3= money they initially paid. that's 30... in case you nonetheless are not getting it then right this is how that is meant to be: each and each paid 9... 9x3=27 (what they paid all jointly) you do no longer upload the top! you upload how a lot they have been given lower back! Why? as a results of fact whilst the bellhop took their money, It grew to become into blanketed interior the room fee! so 27+3=30! Ta-Dah!

The extra dollar should be factored like this:

    Each pays 8 dollars for the room 3 X 8 = 24.

They also pay one dollar each for the one dollar differnce and the two dollar "tip" 1 +2 = 3

    So each pays 9 (8 +1).

So we have each paying 9 dollars.

    3 X 9 = 27. Out of three tens that's one dollar change each.

what dollar are you talking about. there is no extra dollar.

cost of hotel room is $25 + extra money is $3 + money that bellhop puts in his pocket is $2 so,

    25 + 3 + 2 = 30

It's a tricky problem, and it took me a little bit to figure it out, but here's the flaw.

The $2 in the bellhop's pocket is money already paid! $25 for the room, $2 for the bellhop, and $3 got refunded.
