ATTENTION MEXICAN/AMERICANS: Is it a culture thing or what?

When we throw a birthday party for one of my children, we send out invitations to specific friends (of my children), but on party day, not only does the invited child/children show up, but their entire family,(sometimes even extended family), I don't want to be rude, but we don't plan for 60-70 people, we plan for only the children invited, it's getting too expensive. But I don't want to be an ungracious host. Any suggestions?

It's a culteral thing. If you can't afford it, make it a pot luck. Most Hispanics (or Mexican Americans if you feel offended by the first word) are very community oriented. It's not a bad thing and it kind of reminds me of how small towns used to be in the United States. Most people won't hesitate to bring their own food and let me tell you: Tamales, Enchiladas, Chile Rellenos, etc. are soooooo good! Besides, you probably won't have to do much cooking!
