Border collies and thunder?
My 12-year-old border collie (an intense breed to start with) is terrified of thunder, and her panic is getting worse and worse. Wanting to hide, she will literally try to chew her way into a cabinet, for example. I know I could dope her up, but is there a way to teach her that it isn't going to hurt her?

Providing medication to animals that are high-strung and extremely nervous in certain situations does not necessarily 'dope them up.' Given that your veterinarian prescribes the right medication for your dog and the accurate dosage, you may not even be able to tell that your dog is on meds other than the fact that she doesn't act terrified during storms anymore.

Unfortunately collies seem to have an inbuilt fear of thunder. My very large Scotch collie when straight through a plate glass window in an attempt to escape. Not a lot you can do except lock her in a room - you stay with her or perhaps you could soundproof it someway?

check with your vet for some ideas; he/she may be able to refer tyou to someone who can help, if he can't.
