Is the world we live in real, and does it matter?
Is the world we live in real, and does it matter whether or not it is real? This is a question adressed by both the Wachowski brothers in "The Matrix" and (possibly unintentionally) by Douglas Adams in chapter nine of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Restaurant at the End of the Universe." I'm not sure about what "The Matrix" has to actually say other than asking the question, but Douglas Adams's book somewhat answers the second question; The ruler of the universe explains it does not matter, what does matter is that his conception of what reality is CAN make him happy. He says that he isn't sure whether what he sees as a cat named "the Lord" is real, but he is sure that thinking he sees the cat eats makes him happy.
I mostly agree with this, but are there any huge reasons we know the world is real or not real, or that we should care?
I meant chapter twenty nine of the book, sorry. The chapter with the Ruler of the Universe and Zarniwoop's interrogation.

It's impossible to be fake cause your mind sees it, feels it, hears it. Everything we do on earth makes sense. There is nothing that is fake because you create it. Its a conception of mind. How can sometihng be fake if you created it? Whats fake? How is something fake? Even if it is "fake" it has to be something and thats real. Something does exist, somewhere. It doesnt begin or end. No one knows where it is, or where we are.. And we live in it.

Kabbalah and Quantum both agree that what manifests depends on the observer.
Clearly, underlying all this alleged reality is an undulating sea of potential, occupying all possible states at once. What you get is usually what you expect to see. The Sages and scientists agree that your focus of attention, if not creating, at least influences your reality.
Each human occupies a slightly different reality. Two people walk down the same sidewalk together and experience different worlds. One, for example, may live in a racist world stacked against him, the other in a world of endless opportunity. It's all perception, there is no actual "reality", yet all is quite real.
"That which appears is made by that which is not seen" -bible-
So there is the potential realm and the manifest realm. A feedback loop connects the two, for there are not really two, but one we can see and one outside our normal perception.
Should you care? You will probably be happier if you do not. But you're stuck now.....in the philosopher realm, and you can never get out.

New research in neuroscience has a lot to say about that. Reality has become a subjective word. Is there any such thing as a universal reality? What about cultural reality, or sub-cultural reality? What about eternal vs. temporary reality?
Also you'd have a lot of fun watching the movie/documentary: "What the bleep do we know?" about how the way we perceive things shape our own reality.

Reality is what you make it. If you don't like it, it's your own fault. I personally don't care for some other peoples reality.
Our concept of reality is based on the memories our brain has stored. Every brain stores information differently, and recalls the information differently. Reality changes. Often.
When you recognize someone elses view as yours, this is where reality is confirmed. In your mind anyway. :))

considering this is all we know, it doesn't matter, no, we don't know how to prove it, and douglas adams is god. that book does make you think, but then it goes right back to entertaining you and you forget all about it.
really the only thing we can prove is mathematics, but what use is that? if there was another world, please don't tell me about it, i've already got 19 years here.

If the world you live in is real than it does matter.
If the world is not real then what have you got to loose?
Either way, there is only one rational choice.
Get real or get out of the way.

Is this a Capt. Kirk question? better read MORE Carl Sagan books like COSMOS ( BUY THE DVD SET & FIND OUT ) and his other bestsellers. He has the BEST ANSWERS to your query.
