Why is there always 6 people to carry a coffin?

When and where did this tradition start?

    it really depends on the weight of the body,coffin,3 people on each side distributes the weight to make it easier to carry.the tradition probably started years ago when the first coffin was carried,after toting coffins awhile you'll learn what works and don't,as far as how many people will be needed to do it,without stepping on each others foot.

    Not always are there 6 people. Whe children die, their coffins are so small that it might be 2 or 4. How about some of those obese people who weigh over 500 pounds?
