Which (civilized) countries accept you as a citizen if you have a bachelors degree?

My boyfriend told me if we both finish our bachelors degrees we could get dual citizenship in Aulstralia. I'm not sure if he knows what hes talking about. He lived there for 2 years and says this is true. I know with all the immigrant issues in the USA right now this is a touchy subject. I think that if an educated family with lots to offer a country wanted to live in that country they would be welcome.

It is true. They, however, have a list of professions they need, and according of that are the opportunities to go and live there. I have been searching about it myself.

Your degree is an important ingredient in the recipe for obtaining citizenship in a country. However, all countries have different processes which are required by their Immigration Departments. To immigrate to Canada, for instance, dual citizenship is dependent on the American government's permission, not necessarily Canada's. No one can go to a country and just stay there, live there, work there, or go to school there without applying for some type status. Different countries have different time limits established for how long a non-citizen can visit without applying for a legal status in that country. Immigration to Australia is difficult. Some countries have a point system for prospective immigrants. You receive points through things like : how much education you have, how many languages you speak, how critical to the country your educational field is, etc. An example would be : a brain surgeon would be needed in most countries, especially if he spoke two languages. You need to research this thoroughly online, and then by calling Australian Immigrations in Sydney before you start packing. I have walked this path personally. Good luck.

In Canada you can immigrate pretty easily if you score high enough in an immigration test. Having an undergraduate degree gives you a certain number of points, but not enough by itself to make you eligible. I'm not sure what Australia's policy is, but given that Canada is the gold standard of immigration openness, it strikes me as unlikely that Australia has laxer immigration policies. If they do, it would be nice to know.

A degree from a university outside of the country you are wanting to immigrate to might not even be recognized by that country.

  • There are hundreds of other requirements. Check carefully before you decide to immigrate anywhere. A university degree might earn you a couple of points more but would not guarrantee you a permanent residence.

A degree will not get you an automatic citizenship, but it may help. Its a LONG process to get citizenship in another country.
