Check out the Belgariad and the Mallorean by David Eddings. Truly excellent!
They were written in the 80s and 90s, and the Belgariad inspired something of a re-birth for the fantasy genre at the time it was being written.

If you like fantasy books, you should definately check out
The Princess Bride. It has pirates, and is based in a mideaval reality. It's very, very good. Another one that is a decent nautical book is Moby Dick. It is a classic, and although I have never read it, I would think it would be an interesting one for you. Also, as the others have mentioned, Eragon series, LOTR, and the Narnia series are also good. Something I do, is register with Amazon.com and then tell them your preferences in reading. It is free and they give you lots of good recommendations based on what you enjoy. It may help you come up with other ideas about books. Good Luck and Happy reading!

Hemingway has some good stories, like The Snows of Kilimanjaro, and his novel For Whom the Bell Tolls. The French Liutenant's Woman, by John Fowles. Gone With the Wind, by Margaret Mitchell is a great novel. The Incredible Lightness of Being, by Milan Kundera The Good German, by Joseph Kanon. Hope this helps.

lord of the rings or the chroniciles of narnia... both are my favorite and are very fictional...
narnia is an easier read so i would start with that, then after u get those 7 books done, move on to lord of the rings, starting with 'The Hobbit' then the other 3 books after that... trust me, ull find that they're way better than the movies...

Check out The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster. It's another children's fantasy novel about a very wittily constructed world and has some neat wordplay in it. Also, try just about anything by Roald Dahl.

ive just read wrinkle in time by madeleine l' engle. there are 3 more books in the series but i thought wrinkle was pretty good by itself.
also i liked summers at castle auburn by sharon shinn, it's kind of a fairy tale, it brings out the romantic in me hehe...
i always recommend the giver and its other companion books by lois lowry. different versions of a future, one was utopia, the other dystopia.
