alternator/generator?
Hello - I wanted to know the difference between old charging systems -- New cars and cycles use a alternator to charge a 12 volt system -- how does a genetator work on a bike ??? Whats the difference??

Generator produces DC voltage controlled by an external regulator. Alternator produces AC voltage, converted to DC voltage thru an internal rectifier bridge/diode trio and regulator. Alternator are more commonly used because of compact design and simplicity of wiring. All components are internal and in most cases serviceable

Generators and Alternators are virtually the same. They create an electrical output from a mechanical input. Also, generators do not produce D/C, they produce A/C and a rectifier circuit can then convert it to D/C.

A generator makes DC, an alternator makes AC and uses diodes to convert it to DC. Alternators are more efficient, IIRC.

an alternator creats alternating current (ac) and is converted to direct current (dc) with a bridge rectifire
a gernerator will create direct current only but is not capable of as much power cause it is only generating from one side of the sine wave.
