    You haven't been in the great outdoors(TM) much, have you? If you have spent your life in a city, in front of a computer you propably don't understand much about nature.

    Anyway, the donkey is not really scary, but all animals, especially big ones that you are not familiar with can be intimidating. I remember being scared by a cow once! (it does weigh more than a pro wrestler, after all)

    As a general rule, animals are stronger than humans and are more capable of protecting themselves if they feel threatened (donkey kicks used to kill people...). Not to make you scared, but just to remind you that real nature is not a Disney version of the forest.

    I live in a country where donkey is a symbol, there are many here and we find them very noble animals, hard working and always obey their masters, not scary though :)

    Because they have such big teeth...and they make a hideous noise while they go around kicking their legs in the air....it is truly scary!
