Greenday n similar bands......punk or plonk?

I don't mind them, but they 'aint my fave either. However, I do kind of agree what John Lydon (lead singer of the Sex Pistols for those not sure) says:

He said: "Don't try and tell me Green Day are punk. They're not, they're plonk and they're bandwagoning on something they didn't come up with themselves. I think they are phony."

He added on the subject of the Sex Pistols battle with the establishment: "The government's against you, the police are on you. So there we are fending off all that and it pisses me off that years later a **** outfit like Green Day hop in and nick all that and attach it to themselves.”

"They didn't earn their wings to do that and if they were true punk they wouldn't look anything like they do."

I mean, punk was about young out of work English lads who wanted to destroy everything and was totally anti-establishment. When the Pistols toured America loads of places hated em - so how can greenday call itself punk?

Update:

Any valid arguements to back up your point of view would be appriciated

when the godfather of punk speaks, his word is what goes (as far as in that genre of music anyway) if he says it isnt punk, it isnt punk.

i never liked greenday for the same reason, though. punk is anti pop. when you are pop, you are not punk. greenday is pop. pop-punk is an oxymoron.

Green Day owes much to the band Stiff Little Fingers.

All the great punk bands were original. Green Day is a rock band because they didn't break any new ground. They are good, though. Tough question.

i've been a fan of greenday since '94 they were a lot more punk back then but i was very dissapointed to see them on top of the pops. different era's man i find original punk shite but i love the idea

I'm not sure. I definitely would not call them punk just because they don't have that rough raw sound and I don't really know what plonk means. If you really want me to stretch I'd call them post-punk.
