Do you look up answers to questions in order to answer?

For instance, if I asked you what is the capital of Nigeria, and you didn't know the answer, would you try to find it? Why? Because you'd like to know yourself or because you like getting points? Don't you think the person asking such a question could have easily done the same thing as you? So, why is he asking? Let's assume he isn't lazy, and just wants to know how many people know something? Isn't looking things up on the Internet detrimental to his cause? Should this person specify this in his question? Or do you think it's self-understood?

I know there are many questions here, but there's no need to answer them all, they serve to clarify the main questions and the implications I had in mind.

Update:

Thanks to everyone who answered the question(s). It's kind of unusual that many times that does not happen. I wonder do people even read anything beyond that which is written in bold characters?

I do look up the answers to factual questions, but rely on my own experiences and common sense when question askers want advice or ideas on solving a problem.

I think the person could look up the answers themselves and if a person asks something so patently easy to find as the capital of Nigeria, I usually pass those questions up. But I often do answer things that can be looked up by the asker and I enjoy learning about many subjects as I look for those answers.

I doubt that most of the people who ask questions here are researching the base of knowledge that exists among Yahoo! Answers users. If a person did state that, I wouldn't look up the answer to the question. It wouldn't be helpful to him or her, would it?

I'm kind of an information junkie, I guess. I like learning about things and this is a good way to do so. It becomes kind of an Information Scavenger Hunt.

    Good question, by the way!

I think people who ask questions like your example are kids doing homework and are too lazy or too silly to look up the answer which is ridiculous because by the time they typed the question, they would have found the answer if they had googled it.

I look up information to back my answer. Maybe someone is asking about a specific set of symptoms on a body part, or with their cat or dog. I look up the information and provide the person the link.

I don't answer the basic knowledge questions. It's not worth the two points to me.

Sometimes if the question asked is of interest to me, I'll look it up, and by the time I return to Yahoo answers, it may already be answered, and if I can't add anything of signficance to the answer, then I don't bother. But knowledge is an incredible thing to have. Who cares about the points, it's not like money in the bank; but knowledge on the other hand, that's something to have!

From the standpoint of this forum, clearly web searches and research are allowed and even encouraged. Otherwise there would not be a "source" box in the answer page. This entire format is an exercise in discourse, learning, humor, and the statement of the obvious. It's all here from the sublime to the ridiculous. It is to be taken as lightly or as seriously as the question itself implies.

I am the type of person that if I do not know an answer I do research because I want to make sure that I have all of the information I need in order to provide a good answer.

I think the person asking the question isn't being lazy, I think that that person is just posting questions for the sake of it. I answer from the top of my head and if especially of a personal interest.

Looking the other answers first and then answering without knowing just what you read is like cheating...

I just read the beging of each answer to make sure my answer isn't already written.. If it's not, I put down my thoughts, but if it is then you can't offer anything by answering...

i'm many times waiting to understand the which ability of the question from the authors language. So i'm susceptible to respond to with out analyzing anybody else's enter first. i think of area of that is is using my undertaking of impression. If I have been to respond to after analyzing truthfully everyone else's enter, I run the possibility of not answering the author, yet rather the different respondents. So, out of admire for the author, I want to contemplate their suggestions first, and in basic terms supply secondary responses to others, yet on condition that they are particularly called for. there are situations although, while i in my opinion desire readers of my questions would study a number of the different solutions while they declare to be unable to charm to close the which ability of my questions. If the character of the question seems to be like ambiguous, rather some the time others have good interpreted my which ability with such intensity as to do away with any doubt of my unique motive. in specific circumstances i'm getting the sensation that is not something extra effective than subterfuge, a veiled attempt to stay away from what others have shown to be for sure obtrusive and not interior the least indiscernible. I even have been frequently happening to ask many questions that are considered by using some as very uncomfortable on the subject of their subjects. You in basic terms would desire to look at any of the hyperlinks below to make certain the character of my questions, and how in many situations some declare to not GET IT, at the same time as others GET IT basically advantageous with out any concern in any respect. and that i even have the habit of monitoring the responses to my questions consistently by using the approach, to verify that it maintains to be on subject remember. in specific circumstances i'm myself in charge for the subject remember starting to be obscured, by using including edits which regrettably dilutes the unique motive. So i in my opinion would savour others watching those and telling me in the event that they GET IT on their very own, earlier having to analyzing the solutions of others to cut back any pending confusion. thank you for this question.
