What should I do with a non-operating laptop computer?

You might check the value of the laptop by searching ebay. If it is still worth $400 to $500 you might contact you local computer shop. They will do a diagnosis for $60 to $70 and tell you what the problem might be. If they repair it they usually will apply the diagnosis charge towards the repair. It might be something simple like a dead battery causing the issue or the power supply or some other inexpensive problem.

There is very little on an older laptop that is useable as laptops are still proprietary. You can pull the hard drive but if it is small, why bother? You can remove the ram but it may not be good for a newer one. If it is something like a Dell and the components like the CD-Rom and floppy drive are removeable then those things will fit most other Dells, but not Gateways, etc. BTW are you sure it is the motherboard and not the power supply?

Check with your local computer store to see if any organizations are accepting used computers, if so, donate to them. Alot of non-profit organizations accept used and sometimes not working computers to donate to people so they can get jobs and schooling using the computers.

if your in a large city there should be a place that will buy broken down computers and computer parts check out the want ads in the newspaper. if your in a small town you should get some small explosives and blow it up :)

You could sell it on ebay of course. Or you could donate it to worthy organization. Or many small computer repair shops will buy it for parts.
