How did a "myth" change the world as we know it?
Several writers have suggested that "Jesus did not exist"...that the Christian faith is mere invention. This silly notion has absolutely no basis in fact whatsoever. Even secular sources (such as the Roman historian Tacitus) acknowledge the early Christian faith. Nero persecuted/killed hundreds of CHRISTIANS around 64 AD. Domitian did the same at the close of the 1st century. Did these people die for a "myth". If the historical account of Christ could be so easily disproved...why wasn't that done? The fact is, NO ONE challenged the historical record of Christ...they only disagreed with who He said He was.
1FoolN6Billion: The problems you referred to in the Middle ages were not caused by the Christian faith...it was caused by PEOPLE who misrepresented/abused the faith.
The entire New Testament was written before the close of the 1st century. There are SCORES of early 2nd century writers that quote NT books...what more do you want?
JTUCKER: he "Constantine Conspiracy" is ludicris. By the time of the Council the books of the NT had been circulated and translated throught the Mediterranean world. There were 250 PLUS YEARS that the Christian faith was not recognized by Rome. They Church was being persecuted...not perscuting. The fact that there was freedom of thought is obvious...IF you knew anything about that era.
BTW: your link to: http://www.atheists.org/christianity/did...
explains a lot. If all you know is idiotic bias, and not actual history, its no wonder you're ignorant of the facts. I never said that Christianity didn't have "challenges" or unethical leaders at different points in history...of course they did. What does that prove? That wasn't even the point of the original question. What does later abuse have to do with original intent? It proves nothing.
TETHERA: Are you kidding me? What part of Nero & Domitian don't you understand? I didn't think that those were "obscure references". Instead of accussing me of building a "straw man", perhaps you should study history...
BTW: A simply google will give you loads of info on any figure I mentioned!
MO MOSH: Thanks for the link. Believe me, I have studied 1st history in great detail. While your link gives a very brief overview of 1st century conditions, there is MUCH more that could be said. Bottom line: you reject Christ as the Messiah because you take some of the prophecy to be Material/Physical. Christ fulfilled all prophecy...just not in the way you wanted to see it. Have your expectations (of how God should fulfill those prophecies) possibly caused you to reject the one He has sent?
TETHERA: I apologize that I missed your question about "several writers". I think I was at a point of `time to log off and get some sleep' (!). At any rate, I wasn't trying to be cryptic...The writers I was referring to were the responders on "Yahoo Answers" that evening...

1FoolN6Billion:What proof do you have that there was a Jesus who was called king of the Jews?
Kepha: It’s been recorded by several eyewitnesses that Pontius Pilate ordered a sign be put on the cross, “King of the Jews”, and I mean by more than just what’s in the bible.
1FoolN6Billion: What writings have been found before 150 years after the supposed fact?
Kepha: The Gospels were generally accepted as scripture by 130 AD. People don’t die over a myth or story, they die because they were transformed and refused to break their fidelity with God by giving homage to Roman gods. An atheist is blind to such things.
1FoolN6Billion: And to answer your initial question, the myth caused the dark ages, where people were kept, by their religious authorities, from being literate,
Kepha: This is a flat out falsehood. Universities were built all over Europe in the middle ages, and before the Protestant revolt, even the poor could attend without charge. And just where do you think the “religious authorities” got their education? Or were they illiterate too? DUH, HELLO???
1FoolN6Billion: ESPECIALLY from reading the bible,
Kepha: This is another big fat lie.

BIBLE READING PROHIBITED ?

This one is not too long. You will find out about King Henry 8 who decreed that all Catholic bibles were to be destroyed. So a Protestant king orders bibles destroyed, and we are accused of not reading it! DUH! HELLO?

I really like this one. I’m keeping it in my files.
THE CATHOLIC CHURCH: ON READING THE BIBLE
http://members.aol.com/johnprh/reading.html
Proof of the Church teaching to read the bible. Lots of it.
1FoolN6Billion: which they were constantly editing for their own goals.
Who, exactly? Name the goals. Painstaking efforts were made to preserve the bible translated from the original Greek and Hebrew. St. Jerome was fluent in both.
1FoolN6Billion: The dark ages started with emperor Constantine,
Kepha: According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_Ages, the “Dark Ages” didn’t start until Constantine was rotting in the ground for 100 years.
1FoolN6Billion: who liked the idea of being able to absolve all of his sins, and especially liked the idea of claiming that he was ordained under the one and only all-powerful god, making everything that he did anyway "God's will."
Kepha: Constantine did no such thing, and you have not a shred of proof. Constantine was never a priest or bishop, and did not have any church authority at the Council of Nicae, (or anywhere else) which took place 12 years after his famous “Edict of Milan”, which was nothing more than a removal of persecuting laws still on the books. You are in serious revision mode.
1FoolN6Billion: Then it caused the inquisitions, killing more people in a short period than just about anything else thus far, where Jews were required to at least say that Jesus was an historical person if not the messiah.
Kepha: I dare you to document this hogwash. Reliable non-Catholic historians don’t buy into that post-reformist rhetoric. Here is my proof, but I know you will never read it:
The modern historiography of the Inquisition, MOST OF IT BY NON-CATHOLIC HISTORIANS, has resulted in a careful, relatively precise, and on the whole rather moderate image of the institution, some of the most important works being: Edward Peters, Inquisition; Paul F. Grendler, The Roman Inquisition and the Venetian Press; John Tedeschi, The Prosecution of Heresy; and Henry Kamen, The Spanish Inquisition.
Some of their conclusions are: http://www.catholic.net/RCC/Periodicals/Dossier/11... I dare ya.
1FoolN6Billion: Then there was the renaissance, where so much of technology was REgained, but not without a lot of fear of being called a Satanist, and a LOT of people were killed for their insights, such as Galileo and anyone who proved the church WRONG on any matter.
Kepha: Galileo was not killed, and again, you offer no proof. He had a big mouth, claiming to know more about scripture than the church, and he would not shut up. He could not have been mistreated because he was friends with King Ferdinand, and their letters back and forth, which still exist btw, show no indication of mistreatment. If you call “house arrest” with maids and meals and allowed to continue his work, with pay (in a Catholic University) as bad treatment, I wish somebody would do that to me.
http://www.catholic.com/library/Galileo_Controvers...
There where abuses during the Inquisition and the Crusades, but not nearly as much as the anti-catholics suggest.
The best history scholars estimate that maybe 4000 or so people were executed during the Inquisition and most of those were in the Spanish Inquisition which was CONDEMNED by the Pope at the time.
Execution NEVER WAS and never will be a penalty in the Church for heresy or anything else. The most severe penalty in the Church is excommunication.
Those persons during the Inquisition who were executed were killed by the State, not the Church. Yes, there were clerics who conspired with the State to execute some people. The most famous case of that was Joan of Arc. Those clerics who did such things were sinning against God, the Church, and the person executed. Joan of Arc did not die by Church policy, but by the corrupt hands of the State and an individual bishop and inquisitor.
The Crusades were holy endeavors seeking to free Jerusalem from the Muslims who held the city captive and persecuted Christians. The Crusades against Jerusalem were rescue missions.
Other Crusades sought to fight against the Muslim plan to invade Europe and conquer it for Islam. Those Crusades were self-defense against invaders.
Were there abuses during the Crusades? Yes. Men are sinners and wherever men are sin will be present.
For a more complete discussion of the Inquisition and the Crusades you may want to read the pamphlets at http://www.catholic.com/library/Inquisition.asp
It is never God's will for men to sin and to abuse their power. Whenever men do that, regardless of whether the abuser is a laymen, priest, bishop, or even Pope, such people are violating God's will.
1FoolN6Billion: To this day there are miniscule amounts of beatings and murders performed by atheists, particularly due to religion, but plenty performed on them.
Kepha: Wonderful. I look forward to viewing your documented lists of atheists killed for being atheists. We can then compare a head count, starting with your atheist buddy Joseph Stalin who let 20,000,000 Ukrainians starve to death because they didn’t agree with YOUR non-religion.
1FoolN6Billion: The religious (particularly the black and white monotheists) are the ones with the passion to irrationally beat people just because they disagree with them. Accept the gray, my friends.
Kepha: Do you mean the religious atheists who beat on others verbally in Q&A forums? How’s this post for a taste of your own medicine? You offer no gray, just flames.
Kepha: So you accept your unqualified unsubstantiated unhistorical self-invented myths about the Inquisition, the bible, and historical facts in general and you think you are qualified to make statements about Jesus Christ??
1FoolN6Billion: Do you believe that the story of Mohammed is a myth? That has changed the world quite significantly as well.
Kepha: So Mohammed was not a myth, but Jesus Christ is?
Are you some kind of Islamic atheist too?
Or an angry kid with a keyboard?

I don't think anyone has ever said that "Christian faith is mere invention". It clearly isn't mere invention, it exists, people do actually believe that some one named Christ did exist and he was not only the Son of God, but he was God, he was also the Father and he was also the Holy ghost.
On the other hand we have millions upon millions who do not believe all this tripe, but if it gives you some comfort to believe it then good luck to you, just don't keep trying to convince others that any of it is really based on any type of fact, you can (and do) quote the bible as if it is some sort of real authority when it is just a well written (and well edited) novel. Fortunately this particular religion is on the way out, it didn't really last very long did it?
We will soon have another bunch of cr** to replace it!!

The Roman Empire executed or exiled anyone who opposed their fairy tales (Constantine's brand new bible) or Constantine's brand new religion, so why would you expect anything to "disprove" those myths when those who attempted to do so were executed?
Ever hear of the "Inquisitions?"
You obviously don't get out much if you seriously believe Christianity (as invented by the Roman Empire) has never been "disproved" or went without challenge.
Where do you think Protestantism came from if "Christianity" has such a solid foundation?
Perhaps you should seek knowledge instead of remaining ignorant:

A lot of your questions seem to be made up of straw man fallacies. You need to provide links or cites for these "several writers," otherwise it just looks like you're making stuff up so can defend your faith, thus convincing yourself of how strong it is.
ETA: I know who Nero and Domitian are. I don't know who these "several" writers are who claim that Jesus did not exist. You're non-specific on that point. Clearly, you have reading comprehension skills, so you think people are attacking your faith even when they're not.

Myths do not change the world...people change the world...God changes the world according to his guidance and those who listen and follow...those led by their belief in Jesus Chrtist and those who don't.
We did not evolve or anything else. God created the heaven and earth and all things there on.
Lots of people say "Prove God exists"...I say 'Prove He Doesn't'.
I know by my personal experience that God is real. I have seen that same evidence in friends, loved ones and strangers.
You don't believe because you never give God a chance.

JESUS IS REAL!!!!!!!
jesus
(1.) Joshua, the son of Nun (Acts 7:45; Heb. 4:8; R.V., "Joshua").
(2.) A Jewish
Christian surnamed Justus (Col. 4:11). Je'sus, the proper, as Christ is the
official, name of our Lord. To distinguish him from others so called, he is
spoken of as "Jesus of Nazareth" (John 18:7), and "Jesus the son of Joseph"
(John 6:42). This is the Greek form of the Hebrew name Joshua, which was
originally Hoshea (Num. 13:8, 16), but changed by Moses into Jehoshua (Num.
13:16; 1 Chr. 7:27), or Joshua. After the Exile it assumed the form Jeshua,
whence the Greek form Jesus. It was given to our Lord to denote the object of
his mission, to save (Matt. 1:21). The life of Jesus on earth may be divided
into two great periods, (1) that of his private life, till he was about thirty
years of age; and (2) that of his public life, which lasted about three years.
In the "fulness of time" he was born at Bethlehem, in the reign of the emperor
Augustus, of Mary, who was betrothed to Joseph, a carpenter (Matt. 1:1; Luke
3:23; comp. John 7:42). His birth was announced to the shepherds (Luke 2:8-20).
Wise men from the east came to Bethlehem to see him who was born "King of the
Jews," bringing gifts with them (Matt. 2:1-12). Herod's cruel jealousy led to
Joseph's flight into Egypt with Mary and the infant Jesus, where they tarried
till the death of this king (Matt. 2:13-23), when they returned and settled in
Nazareth, in Lower Galilee (2:23; comp. Luke 4:16; John 1:46, etc.). At the age
of twelve years he went up to Jerusalem to the Passover with his parents. There,
in the temple, "in the midst of the doctors," all that heard him were
"astonished at his understanding and answers" (Luke 2:41, etc.). Eighteen years
pass, of which we have no record beyond this, that he returned to Nazareth and
"increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man" (Luke 2:52).
He entered on his public ministry when he was about thirty years of age. It is
generally reckoned to have extended to about three years. "Each of these years
had peculiar features of its own. (1.) The first year may be called the year of
obscurity, both because the records of it which we possess are very scanty, and
because he seems during it to have been only slowly emerging into public
notice. It was spent for the most part in Judea.
(2.) The second year was the
year of public favour, during which the country had become thoroughly aware of
him; his activity was incessant, and his frame rang through the length and
breadth of the land. It was almost wholly passed in Galilee.
(3.) The third was
the year of opposition, when the public favour ebbed away. His enemies
multiplied and assailed him with more and more pertinacity, and at last he fell
a victim to their hatred. The first six months of this final year were passed in
Galilee, and the last six in other parts of the land.", Stalker's Life of Jesus
Christ, p. 45. The only reliable sources of information regarding the life of
Christ on earth are the Gospels, which present in historical detail the words
and the work of Christ in so many different aspects.

I am not sure that you have a question here. I think that you have just espoused a view. However, I would say that it was not a myth that changed our world. Jesus is real and He has changed our world out of love for us all.
