Why doesnt the UK Government do more for Sport?
I am under the believe that the UK underachieves in major sporting events due to a lack of investment in grass-root sporting schemes.
They wonder why we do not have the same levels of young talent emerging, when there are the quality facilities, nor the levels of sponsorship/funding available in other countries. I wanted to know other people's opinion on this matter...

I have to agree that the investment is poor. As an ex-pat Aussie living in the UK it is clear that the English don't show the same level of government support as we do. I guess maybe it's because there is only so much money to go around, and the populace insist on maintaining an expensive health service, NHS dentists, and other traditional tax absorbers; and that in light of this someone running for office won't win votes by saying "I'm going to eliminate non-private dentistry and build a National Institute of Sport"

I think you will find the same for the U.S in Rugby etc. Maybe it's all about the PR for sport in the U.K.
I know the same problem was also discussed in NZ and Australia but has picked up alot due to educational institutes putting more into there physical activities component and sponsorship being pushed.

i think the Australian government spends too much money on sport! being the greatest sporting nations on earth hasn't helped us from being one of the most obese.
If Australians at a grass roots levels were committed to science, education, research, arts and philanthopy we'd be a much more competitive nation where it actually matters. As it is, our only sense of security comes from beating the Poms at cricekt, which we failed at in 2005!
The fact that Britain sucks at sport doesn't matter in my opinion, it doesn't stop them from loving and enjoying it and it doesn't stop them from having one of the best football leagues in the world supported almost entirely by the private sector.

I think this goverment are not really interested in sport. When it comes to elections and votes then they appear interested but they have bigger fish to fry such as the NHS and crime
