President Theodore Roosevelt
Theodore Roosevelt's ideas on Immigrants and being an AMERICAN in 1907.
"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else,
for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an
American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to
the American people."

I concur. If you are in a new land and desire to become a citizen of that land, you must learn the ways, the language, the tradition. You don't forget your past, but you use it in a way that you can adopt your new country's ways and customs.
You cannot be a citizen and have two countries, either you are or are not a citizen...

OK, I checked. It's from 1919... just after WWI and the Russian Revolution. And their is not room for "the red flag", not any flag.
And the statement also says that "Every immigrant who comes here should be required within five years to learn English or to leave the country".
So, as you see, Theddy should agree with Mexican immigrants.

What would he say know or what would he say as a poor Mexican illegal working as a busboy sending 3/4 of his pay to his family which he will never see again? It's strange what you'll learn in a job interview. I go in to be a manager of an upscale NYC Mexican restaurant and end up talking politics for 3 hours.

First, this has been posted about 15 times today already.
Roosevelt was specifically talking about an English only policy, not necessarily a stringent immigration policy.
