That is supposedly the date that the Mayan Calendar ends. But even that is kind of a misnomer.
The rationale behind this myth has to do with the glyphs carved into the steps on the Temple of the Sun in Palenque. The glyphs relate to dates on the Mayan calendar cycle, and certain people believe that as we reach the top step that is when we're going to have the dawning of the "fifth sun" or new age if you will.
Now, this is a problematic thing for 2 reasons. 1) the Mayans had 2 calendrical systems. One was a 260 religious cycle calendar and the other was a 365 day solar calendar. These two calendars were used simultaneously. AND 2) These calendars were not linear, but were written in a ring. As one cycle ended it led back around to the beginning.
Like all "end of days" kinds of prophecies this too will come and go. Whether there are actually forces that occur in that time period, I have no idea, nor does anyone else for that matter.
What's really going to happen at that time is that the earth will be in a position such that the milky way will have an opening (which is really about where the galactic core is) and through that opening the sun will rise, i.e. being reborn.

I've had feelings there is going to be a very very very very very big change some time around 2010~2014, that will probably make things a lot better (or a lot worse, but leaning for the better right now).
While I am not so sure it's going to be around then, I did poke around once and find that the Mayan calender starts a new age then... Apprently the Mayan calender works in a very long cycle of over 10,000 years and the curent one is ending some time late 2012. Wich means the end of a Mayan age and the start of a new one.
Now sence aprently the curent age is the age of man, a lot of people think thats going to be the end of the world or some such. But it realy could only be the start of the age of space colonization or some such..... lol... for all we know they could start a progect to put a colonly on the moon in 2012 and that would be it.
Not that I put much trust in the feelings I get if there right just means there is going to be change..... And if the mayans are right, it means the end of something and the start of something else......
Nether is the end of the world.

Ever played the game Incoming? Well thats exactly what will happen but the aliens will do more than destroy the military base at Africa. They will melt Antartica and start a new ice age. We will fortunately manage to kill them before they us. But then it will be really cold...

According to the Mayan Civilization it's supposed to be the end of the world as we know it.
