Another Bahamian chiming in!
Where in the Bahamas are you going to and what are you lookin for?
Nassau and Freeport are our two cities. They are really for gamblers (good casinos) and persons wanting a full resort experience. Atlantis on Paradise Island is incredible for someone looking for a Caribbean interpretation of a Vegas experience.
Also, Nassau and Freeport are good for full watersport activities.
These cities can be pricey, but my experience is that everywhere in the Caribbean is pricey until and unless you get away from the tourist traps and get to where the locals hang out! In Nassau, the locals hang out that the "Fish Fry", a collection of fish stalls and rustic restaurants where a full array of seafood is prepared, including conch, the Bahamian specialty.
Outside of the cities, my recommendation for something different is to get out to the Outer Islands of the Bahamas. There you find quiet beaches, wonderful locals and a true taste of Bahamian life. On Harbour Island, a small cay (key) just off of Eleuthera, there is the pink sands beach where the sands are literally pink! Consistently rated one of the best beachs in the world. You can get a day ferry to this wonderful and charming spot.
Contrary to what was said in another answer, the larger of these outer islands are not difficult to get to at all. Some are serviced by major US air carriers such as American or Continental.
By in large though, if you are coming for sand, sun and sea, you will not do better than the Bahamas.

Depends which Island you visit.
The main Island is New Providence (Nassau). Mostly people go to the Bahamas for the beaches so there really isn't THAT much to do there. It is pretty expensive - the Bahamian dollar is always on Par with the US dollar but things still cost more than the US. If you go to the Market (the main tourist attraction) you can buy souveniers but they are all made and imported from china - lame. The locals are generally unfriendly but there are some really great people there too. There is a lot of garbage lying around (but there are sooo many careless tourist to litter as well). The Bacardi Rum Plant is always a good time, you can tour the plant and then head to the bar for FREE samples. Altantis Resort is on Paradise Island (just one bridge away) from the main island and there is stuff to do there. Gamble, water sports, shop, eat, spa.
On the other side of Nassau is Stewart Coves Dive shop. It's famous for snorkeling tours and Dive tours - great friendly staff too (recommended!).
Rum is totally cheap in Bahamas so prepare to have a party when you go.
Hope this helps.

The Bahamas are nice but an expensive tourist trap on the main islands. The more obscure islands are hard to get to.Why not try the Cayman Islands?

i live there. its not that much fun when you're a local but paradise island definitely is the main attraction. i really love the crystal clear becahes, pink sand, warm weather and beautiful flora. but the only thing is that it never snows. i always wanted to touch snow.(wonder how it tastes). and another thing people from america (at least alot of them) think we are just a bunch of stupid savages who live in the bush!!!! WELL WE'RE NOT!!. of course i would definitely reccomend the bahamas. nassau has a lot to do especially atlantis, paradise island, cruises snorkeling, spas but also exuma is starting to get more developed and we've heard alot of positive feedback from that island. so hope u decide to come :-)
