    The lowdown on baby monitors

A baby monitor, actually a radio transmitter, allows you to keep tabs on your little one without standing vigil outside your child's door. These compact two-part gadgets — a transmitter and receiver — are particularly useful when your infant is still young enough that his waking in the middle of the night means he needs to be fed, changed, or comforted. During the day, a monitor also allows you enormous freedom during naptime, no matter what your baby's age.

Typically, you place the transmitter within 10 feet of your baby's crib so that it picks up any sounds — such as her moving and crying — once you turn it on. Then, you can carry the receiver around the house with you or leave it plugged in by your bed. Most monitors offer the option of using batteries as well as a wall plug. Newer models allow your baby to hear your soothing voice, or enable you to see your baby with a camera.

Indispensable as they are, these electronic godsends, do have drawbacks: Interference from concrete walls, cordless phones, or other baby monitors can alter what you hear on your unit. "At least once a week, we pick up another family's child on our baby monitor," says a mother of one in San Francisco. "We've learned never to discuss anything private when the unit is on."

Another consideration: To prevent an accidental shock, never place a baby monitor in or around water.

Compactness: The smaller the model, the more easily you can carry it around the house.

    • A low-battery light: If the batteries run out of juice, you may not hear your little one calling out for you or singing all the words to "I'm a Little Teapot." So get a monitor that alerts you to the need for replacements.

    • A sound-activated light: If you're vacuuming the floor, calming another child, or watching TV, you might miss your baby's whimpers. But a unit that lights up when it detects noise allows you to glance at the monitor and know instantly what's going on.

    • A double receiver: Some models come with two receivers, which can come in handy if you'd like to leave one in your room and keep one with you as you move around the house or go outside.

    • The right bandwidth for you: Some high-end models from Sony and Fisher Price, among others, offer a wide bandwidth (up to 900 megahertz) for better clarity. That's fine if you live in a suburb or out in the country. But if you live in an area with lots of potential interference (portable phones, cell phones, other monitors, etc.), a low bandwith, such as the 40 megahertz offered by Graco's Ultraclear, will serve you better in the long run.

What it's going to cost you

Baby monitors can cost anywhere from $40 to $90 for radio models and up to $300 for those with the video option.

We LOVE our Angelcare monitor. I doesn't have video but it has a sensor you put under the mattress that will set off an alarm if your baby stops breathing. It provides total peace of mind for new parents!
