Holiday destinations...??

Ok, Myself and my friend are looking for holiday destinations and are at a loss as to where to go. Iceland is at the top of the list, but I want to hear other people's favourite holiday destinations, what impressed them about it, any unusual area's etc...?

I won't be going to

Ireland( because I live there and have been to every place nearly a hundred times)

England( have been there aswell loads of times)

France( been there four or five times and have travelled all around the country)

New York(because I'm going there in November already)

Can anyone give me some idea's of whats out there??

Try Puerto Rico. Fly into Aguadilla and then its a few minute drive to Moca. A wonderful little town. I don't know of any hotels there but maybe some near there. Also Westin Rio del Mar is a great hotel on the other side of the island. You're ten minutes away from a tropical rainforest.

May I also suggest Singapore. Sounds boring but I hear it is filled with stuff to do. You can also drive from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur to see the Petronas Twin Towers. Both might be a far flight from Ireland though...

10 days, room only, private tour of Taj Mahal

Amarvilas, which is sanscrit for 'eternal haven', is one of India's smartest hotels, a no-expense spared homage to this city's architectural wonders. As you would expect from a hotel of this standard, the rooms are gorgeous and it's not a bad place to get cosy with the one you love for a couple of days! But it's not just the luxury of the hotel you're paying for. The hotel's been cunningly designed so that every one of the 112 rooms has a front row view of the Taj Mahal.

The hotel spa, complete with that special view, is the perfect place to wash off the dust before dinner. Along with some of the greatest buildings and busiest hareems, the moguls left us with some of the best food on the planet, the curry. The food in the hotel is very tasty, very delicate and above all, authentic.

    Homage to love

The Taj Mahal is undisputably one of the world's finest buildings and nothing can quite prepare you for your first glimpse. From a distance, the Taj is remarkable enough - it dominates the landscape. The hoards of tourists swarming across it seem like ants. Up close, it's even better. The white marble inlaid with thousands of precious stones in intricate designs, is a detail that Ginny hadn't expected.

It was built in the middle of the 17th century by the fifth great mogul emperor, Shah Jahan. So what makes the Taj Mahal so romantic? It's probably the fact that it was built as a monument to just one woman, Shah Jahan's favourite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Heartbroken by her death, he spent 20 years and used 20,000 men to create the ultimate testament to their love. But the course of true love doesn't always run smooth and the poor man ended up locked up in Agra's fort by his own son, and spent the rest of his days only able to gaze across at his wife's tomb.

    Red Fort at Agra

The fort is Agra's second must-see sight. It was the stronghold of the mogul empire for three generations. The enormous sandstone ramparts are very impressive, although like many of India's great monuments it's in need of some serious restoration. Ginny liked the way it had faded and was a bit shabby. In so many other places, this would be pristine landscaped gardens, with a car park just outside. The way it's been left gives you the feeling of what it would have been like to have lived there.

    Visit Akbar's ghost city

Both of the city's big sights can become very crowded, noisy and polluted. The best way to avoid the hubbub is to visit them in the morning or late evening. Alternatively, you can pay a visit to a city with no residents at all - the ghost city of Fatehpur Sikri. Situated about an hour's drive outside Agra, it was built by the greatest mogul emperor of them all, Akbar, but inhabited for only 30 years. It's now been deserted for four centuries, but in its heyday, Akbar was reckoned to have had 5,000 women holed up there in his hareem.

Bad defenses and dwindling water supplies meant that Akbar decided to leave but the city's mosque is still an important place of worship. This is the spot to make a wish - romantic or otherwise. Tie a piece of string around the ornate lattice work and you never know your luck - it might come true.

Verdict: India gets all your senses going - the birds, the flowers, the incense and the sounds drifting over from the mosque - it feels so exotic
