Does it have a name? Most WiFi hotspots have a name that the user can see so he knows who to thank for the hotspot. If the network name is the default for the wireless router then it is most likely your neighbors. If you are a good neighbor you could talk to your neighbor and let him know that his network is wide open so he can fix it. He might be grateful to you and still let you use it.

Wireless connections have a limited range. If you are picking up the wireless connection at home, you can assume the network belongs to one of your neighbors, assuming you don't live next to StarBucks.
There may be other wireless networks in the area that you aren't picking up. If your computer detects a wireless network, it is because the SSID is being broadcasted. SSID broadcasting is enabled by default on most access points.

Google for a program called 'Network Stumbler' it's free to download and use from its creator. It will tell you how many networks are "visible" to your wireless card- their signal strength, whether or not they're encrypted, (U need a password to get on), name etc. Heck it's even GPS compatible so you can pinpoint the wireless access point. It's a fun program. It's used for wardriving.

there will be an automatic update or search for service in your area, whereever you are. If you click on the connection icon on the bottom right, you'll see the different connections you have around you. Some might be blocked though.
You won't be able to see which one of your neighbors have wireless network.

if its a cellular companies hotspot it will usually have their own name, or like starbucks if u have that their, u can only join their network by them giving u a unique user name or password. private networks usually have a specfic name, like some people use their families name, and if private, sometimes they have passwordsn set up

Walk around with your laptop and watch for signal strength to increase or decrease.
