Why do you believe in God?
I personally do not believe in God, or in Heaven or Hell, but I am always curious as to why people do. I'd rather that people didn't quote the bible to me, as it's not something that I feel is true - what I am interested in finding out is what it is that makes you believe in your heart.
I personally find organised religion (of any persuasion) slightly distasteful - I can't really see that it's done anything for the world other than cause wars and subjugate women and indigenous peoples. Every extremist group seems to find justification for their actions in the Bible/Koran/Torah (I'm thinking of the KKK, Al'Quida etc) but I am also aware that the Bible/Koran/Torah has a lot to say that is worth paying attention to, whether or not you believe in God - why is it that the good in the book is so often ignored in favour of parts that incite violence and intolerance?
I have noticed that a lot of people are trying to give me proof - I don't want proof - I'm not asking to be convinced because I am happy with my lack of belief. I will die and eventually my atoms will mix with the world and I think that's a happy thought - I don't need to believe in heaven to counteract my fear of death as I don't have a fear of death. Obviously, I hope it's a long time coming as I have a life to enjoy, but it doesn't scare me.
Yes, I do believe that the world made itself. I do not see evidence of a creator anywhere - the wondrous 'design' of the world is not design - it's a glorious accident and you only have to look at planets that didn't quite make it (i.e. Venus and Mars) and all the mistakes along the way to realise how very lucky we are that we have a world to live in at all - but it is luck, not intent. I asked this question because I wondered why some people feel a need to believe and some don't. Thank you to those who answered with candour and honesty

Do you know what I don't know why I do. I am moderately intelligent, well travelled and tolerant of others views, belief and lifestyles. I just do. i have not always done so but since i was about 21 (35 years ago) I have. I have doubts and consider them valid. I hold pretty orthodox Quaker belief with strong reformed chuch influence. I share your general distaste and agree with your comments.
However in the end my only hope is on some bloke who died on the cross 2000 years ago and then got better.

I think we all agree that the sun comes up every day. we've all seen it and everyone else talks about it too. What if someone had only ever lived in a dark cave their whole lives, they would have trouble believing or understanding this concept of the sun. If people are exposed to an idea or a way of thinking often enough throughout their lifetime, the faith invested into that idea will become quite hard to change. When we then have all these different movements explaining things in there own ways, it's very easy for people to become frustrated when they assume someone else has missed the point or is ignorant. I believe that all the faiths in the world are aiming towards the same thing if we could just get past the communication barriers.
The good in the books is not often ignored, it is understood differently by different people. We only hear about the bad because it makes the news. But spare a little thought for the billions who are ignoring the ignorers!

I believe in God (Source) because it is something that I can feel.
I feel it in my body, but it is not a physical part.
It's just there.
I to am not a big fan of organized religion, but in the same token, I take a lesson fron their teachings.
Some people say that faith is a driving factor in their belief, but for me it is something that I can feel and use.
I understand that this will be with me forever.
I am not a good person.
I am not a bad person.
But I know right from wrong in every part of me and will use this knowedge untill I meet my end.
There are far to many people who get caught up in the "fight".
If I must fight the "fight", I will fight the good fight.
Untill that day, I'll just try to live as a normal Man in an ordinary world.
Peace.

Why I believe in God.
I was raised in an emotionally abusive home. My mother, yelled, screamed, cussed, verbally hated and verbally wished my sisters and myself had never been born.
When I was a sophomore in high school, I decided to quit cussing. My friends laughed at me and asked me why. I would always reply: "I don't know! I just want to." The truth is I did not know why. But my efforts were in vein. No matter how hard I tried, I could not break this habit. As life went on I my quest was placed in the back of my thoughts.
I soon started to date a young man. Who, in local vernacular, was known as a backslider. About a year later I became pregnant. After my son was born, I knew that I could not give him the childhood I had. The question then became how do I break this chain. The answer was my son's paternal grandmother. She was loved and respected by her children and there was just something about her. So I followed her to church.
I know that right now this could all seem to be emotionalism. ... but wait there's more. When my son was 3 weeks old I received the baptism of the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in other tongues. I would give scriptural references but you said you did not want any.
A little while later, I was riding along with my boyfriend. Something was said and I did not respond with the phrase I would normally use. My boyfriend and myself both noticed at the same time. I had finally did it. I had finally quit cussing. Though at the time I wasn't even trying to.
Did God force me to quit cussing? NO! He just took a desire from the back of my heart and mind and allowed it to come true. This was something that I could not do on my own. But something I desperately wanted. SO God helped me.
This may not seem like much too you, but it is everything to me. It may seem boring to you. I was not hooked on drugs or alcohol. I did not have a miraculous limb reattachment. Though, I have never cussed my child. My child had never heard the words I hate you. My child has never heard the words I wish you were never born. This is a miracle to me.
I now know that this is a chain linking generation to generation. Society has many examples of children repeating the mistakes of the parents. From generation to generation there are physical abusers, emotional abusers, alcoholics, drug addicts, child molesters, etc... The list can go on and on. For this family the chain broke with me. However it did not break with my sister. This is why I know that God and only God helped me.

Because we live in an ordered universe; therefore I believe in God. Proverbs 22:6, Train up a child the way he should go and when he is old he shall not depart from it.
I Corinthians 13:8a, Love never fails.

Personal experience tells me that there is a God. I've been a Christian for the past 20 years and yes... sometimes God feels far away and allthat jazz, but guess what... He is right here by me every second of every day. Here is something to think about:
If there is no God, and you believe there is... what do you have to lose? BUT if there is a God and you do not believe in Him... Dude, you are in trouble!

here we go again...
if u don't believe in God, why all the obsession about His existence? i mean, i believe in God and i DO NOT waste time asking non believers if they believe or not and why. so if, despite the fact that you're breathing at this very moment, you still decide you won't believe, leave us the hell alone and quit obssessing over something you don't believe in cause that makes you a fool.
for the record: why i believe in Allah is NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS.

I believe because He revels Himself through everything. You know, sometimes in the life happens such things that awakes you to search. There is somebody who is helping and leading through the life, don't you want to serve Him in return? St.Brigitte is praying: "Lord, show me Your way and make me willing to follow it." God bless.

Sad that you could not get one intelligent answer on this subject.
Picking good or bad out of any literature is called quote mining (bad) or cherri picking (good).

Consider this : An archaeologist digs deep into the desert sand and finds a piece of an old clay pot. After his investigations, this archaeologist can tell us, from this little old piece of dusty clay, so much about the civilisation that existed thousands of years ago that produced it; he can tell us about the types of ovens, temperatues, and dyes that they worked with, the raw materials that they used, and thus assess the level of their artistic skill and technological ability, etc. All this from a small piece of clay lying in the desert.
Did this archaeologist ever see the civilisation that produced this pot ?
How does he know that it ever existed ?
He knows because he saw that the piece of clay was produced by someone who designed it, and shaped it, and had the intelligence to be able to heat it and produce the pot, and not only that, they also had the ability to colour it and make it look beautiful.
Design ==> Designer.
To the archaeologist the existence and intricacy of the piece of pottery is conclusive proof of the existence, intelligence and ability of the people who made it.
Look around you: at the beautiful sunset on a summer evening, at the moon and the stars on a cloudless night, at the water that you drink, at the trees and how they grow from tiny seeds.
Think about yourself: your eyes with which you see, your ears with which you hear, your tongues with which you taste and talk, your hands and your feet, your heart and your brain.
Consider how these things are so complex in themselves and yet work together in such perfect harmony.
From the movement of the galaxies to the complexities of the interaction of molecules, from the dynamics of eco-systems to the intricacies of DNA, all lead to the obvious fact of the existence of the great Wisdom, Knowledge and Power that allows our Universe to exist and function.
To any perceptive person the existence and intricacy of creation is conclusive proof of the Existence, Knowledge and Wisdom of the One who creates, organises and sustains it.
Most people naturally recognise the existence of the Creator, and we find reference to the Creator in all cultures and religions. Even the atheists, communists and (disbelieving) scientists cannot avoid this reality, but avoid the term 'creator', for phrases like 'Mother Nature' and 'the amazing way nature has designed...'
How strange in the face of this, that many today reject the belief in the existence of the Creator. Perhaps this is due more to fashion and the desire to justify a materialistic attitude to life rather than real observation and comprehension of reality.
Something stranger still, and perhaps another reason for the trend to deny the Creator, are those who claim that a man, or men, who walked on the earth, breathed air, who had bodies and souls subject to the Laws of the Universe, are the Creator, or manifestations of the Self-Subsistent One.
This is of course a complete contradiction in terms. Something cannot be the Creator and created at the same time, needing air, food and drink and being self-sufficient, being temporary and eternal!
If you are one of those who believe that a man such as Buddha, or Krishna, or Jesus is the Creator and Controller, then think again.
We were created from a drop of despised fluid, in which was a microscopic sperm, which in turn fertilised a microscopic egg and we grew in our mother's womb in stages predetermined, over which we had no control. We came from our mother's womb, urinating and defecating, needing constant attention and care. Without food we will die, without air we will die ... and then such a one is God?
Indeed any intelligent person would recognise exactly how dependant life, the universe and everything is on its Creator. Our dire need for His help makes itself plain in times of great distress.
Imagine yourself in an aeroplane and you know it is going to crash...
Who do you turn to for help then ?
Or on a ship in the sea, thrown helplessly up and down by towering waves ...
There will have been a situation at one time or the other in your life when you called upon your Creator alone, forgetting everyone and everything else, hoping, trusting, wishing that the Being you know in your heart and soul that has power and control over all things would help you. The only One you know can save you!
O creature of God, contemplate upon these verses:
" Behold! In the creation of the Heavens and the Earth; In the alternation of the night and day; In the sailing of the ships through the Oceans for the profit of mankind; In the rain which God sends down from the skies, and the life that He therewith to an earth that is dead; In the beasts of all kinds that He scatters through the Earth; In the change of the winds, and the clouds which they trail like their slaves between the sky and the earth -Indeed these are signs for a people that are wise." [The Qur'aan 2:164]
"It is He who has made the sun a shining glory and the moon a light of beauty and has measured out their stages, that you might know the number of years and their reckoning.Allah did not create this but in Truth. He explains His signs in detail for people who understand.[The Qur'aan 10:5]
"He has created the heavens and the earth with Truth. Far is He above having the partners that they ascribe to him. He has created mankind from a sperm drop; and behold this (same) man becomes anopen disputer! And the cattle, He has created them for you; in them is warmth (warm clothing) and numerous benefits, and of them you eat." [The Qur'aan 16:3-5]
"Blessed be He who sent down the Criterion to His servant that it may be an admonition to all creatures. To Him belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth; no son has he begotten, nor has He any partner in His dominion; It is He who created all things and gave them their due proportions.Yet they have taken besides Him gods that can create nothing but are themselves created; that have no control of hurt or good to themselves; nor do they control life nor death nor Resurrection."[The Qur'aan 25:1-3]
"Were they created by nothing or did they create themselves? Or did they create the heavens and the earth ? No, they have no firm belief."[The Qur'aan 52:36]
"He it is who enables you to travel through land and sea, until, when you are in the ships and they sail with a favourable wind and you are glad about that. Then comes a stormy wind and the waves come to you from all sides and when you think that you are encircled by them, you call upon God making your faith pure for Him alone saying :'If You deliver us from this we shall truly be grateful.' But when He delivers you, behold! you rebel in the earth wrongfully. O mankind, your rebellion against God is only against your own selves - a brief enjoyment of this wordly life, then in the end unto Us is your return We shall inform you of that which you used to do." [The Qur'aan 10:22-23]
