The piece is one of only a handful of surviving complete paintings by Leonardo. there are different theories of why he took the painting with him when he moved to Paris, at the behest of the King of France. My favorite theory is that the artist fell in love with his subject and didn't want to part with the picture when he was finished with it.
Eventually, the salary Leonardo received from the King of France became too little for him to live on, and he sold the painting to the King for 4,000 gold pieces. The picture became part of the royal collection. At the time, the Louvre was a royal palace. After the French Revolution, the palaces of France (including both the Louvre and Versailles) became public museums, and the Mona Lisa has been on public display ever since.
The picture has left the building periodically for public tours. After all, it's the most famous artwork in the world, and people want to be able to see it without going to France. However, the last time the picture traveled was to a showing in Japan in 1974. It hasn't left the Louvre since.
On Monday, August 21, 1911, the Mona Lisa was stolen by an Italian nationalist who felt the same way you do and wanted the picture returned to Florence. It was missing for 27 months. Suspects in the theft included museum workers, art historians, and even Pablo Picasso. The picture was eventually recovered when the thief made a rather brazen attempt to sell it to an Italian art gallery.

This is what the Louvre, Paris has to say about it.!
This portrait was doubtless painted in Florence between 1503 and 1506. It is thought to be of Lisa Gherardini, wife of a Florentine cloth merchant named Francesco del Giocondo - hence the alternative title, La Gioconda. However, Leonardo seems to have taken the completed portrait to France rather than giving it to the person who commissioned it. It was eventually returned to Italy by Leonardo's student and heir Salai. It is not known how the painting came to be in François I's collection.

The Da Vinci Code is a book by Dan Brown, about cryptic messages Da Vinci left in his paintings about Christianity. No special glasses are needed, the Last Supper clearly contains a message sitting to the Jesus's right.

It has been a part of France's royal collection since the early 16th century. King Francis I purchased the painting from Leonardo after the artist accepted his invitation to live in France in 1517.

the Louvre is home to one of the greatest collections in the world, it is the greatest honor that the Mona Lisa(or any painting or sculpture for that matter) could ever get!
