My 2 year old Cairn Terrier won't stop barking.. Neighbors very upset!?

I have a 2 dogs: a 13 year old Lhapa mix (who's perfect!) and a 2 year old Cairn Terror, I mean terrier.

She's an inside dog but I live in a townhouse, where I share a wall with my neighbor. The dog does not bark when we are at home. She's an Angel when we are home. When we are gone to work or do to errands, she barks. I am not sure if its non stop but she does bark at anything.. moving tree, the cats meowing etc.

We even kept the TV on, but the neighbor said he can hear her through the walls! We tried the high pitch collar, but it annoys her even more. We are thinking about the shock collar but don't want to spend money if its a waste, and my husband even thought of de-barking her, but i think its inhumane.

She's been a barker since she was a pup, and we thought its a phase. Its not... so HELP! I don't want my neighbor to hate me.

PS: The latest crisis was Sunday on Mom's Day. We left the house early at 7 am, and got a call on the cell from the neighbor, a bit upset

Update:

Please read the information:

If we try a bark (Shock) collar, DO they work?? The one that makes high pitch sound did not!!

Update 2:

Sorry shooting or getting rid of the dog is not an option. We paid big bucks for her, and I am not about to toss her away... not for $1200- DUH!

I am in a similar situation I too live in a townhouse and I have a Dachshund and a shiatsu. The Dachshund Barks at his own shadow and I had to get him to stop barking. I went ahead and bought a shock collar and it did wonders it scares him at first but it teaches them real quick not to bark...it is well worth the money...Do not de-bark her because the vocal cords grow back sometimes and it sometimes is not effective and it is kinda cruel. The shock coller does not hurt it just scares them. You can even have the coller shock you so you know what the dog will feel. Go with the bark coller...Good Luck..

You have a few options for barkers, please don't let an e-collar be one of them. The e-collars that are made for barking only have a couple of settings and can't accurately be monitored, the only good e-collars are the ones with a setting of at least 0-50, controlled by a radio static dial, that will only work with you around. Putting a bark collar on your dog and leaving her alone is more inhumane that cutting her vocal chords and could kill her! Is there a dog day care where you live? They are great alternatives for dogs who can't be left alone. Most importantly you need to get her into some training, even if she is well behaved when you are around, acting out when you are gone could be a sign that she does not trust your judgment as pack leader and that he has some dominance issues. Try reading the book Ceasers way, by Ceaser Milan (the dog whisperer) Defiantly look into training though. No one can tell you that an e-collar doesn't hurt unless they have used it on them selves, if you do have yo go that way, be sure to try it on your self first and never stay gone too long.

Too bad you can't shoot the neighbor......

Anyway! Have you tried crating her while you are gone? Dogs are natural "den" animals and it may help her to feel safer while she is alone. I had a Yorkie who was similar. Angel while I was home, the demon came out as soon as I left for work. Try getting her a crate with chewies and toys. Place her in it for short periods while you are home and then next time you go out to the store or a movie, see if she responds to the training. Make sure you keep the crate covered with an old towel or blanket to make it seem even more cave-like. Good Luck!!

Bark collars work on certain dogs, as well as citronella collars(same idea as bark collar, it just sprays citronella instead of a shock) it's sort of hit or miss, there is no guarantee your dog will respond....sorry

Your dog is use to u being there. You can get a muzzle and the electric collar..well you can try. There are even sprays for that too. As for your neighbor, they just have to deal with it. I have to lol. I have neighbors whose dogs bark at 2 am in the morning and won't quiet it down till 5 am. I deal with it. I'll leave u a link to find the best product for the barking issue.

Terriers bark, you have to keep them amused when you are out. Get someone to come in at a regular time to visit them, or move, the neighbors will never be satisfied. Not a good house dog for working people.

A dog should be trained on how to eat, walk with you, not to bark, potty training and sleep on its place etc. You can teach anything to your puppy, dogs get trained easily with some good instructions. If you want some good training tips visit https://tr.im/onlinedogtraining

If properly trained, they should also understand whistle and gesture equivalents for all the relevant commands, e.g. short whistle or finger raised sit, long whistle or flat hand lay down, and so on.

It's important that they also get gestures and whistles as voice may not be sufficient over long distances and under certain circumstances.

If you don't crate her, you might want to consider it. It might help her feel more secure while everyone is gone. Puts lots of toys in the crate also to prevent boredom. I reluctantly bought a shock collar to my puppy, I felt guilty like it was unhumane at first. At night I would put the collar on and put her in the crate. Soon she learned that there was no barking in the crate, hence no barking when you are gone. Now when I leave she gets in her crate without a peep.

Also important, take her on lots of walks... especially right before you leave (to help her release some of that energy).

I have a pit bull terrier that we are having the same problem with. What we have found is to switch their frame of mind away from the door. For example, when someone knocks on the door we put a leash on him and make him sit (or do another command that he feels comfortable doing) but he cannot just sit there and bark. We had to do a trial and error method to find out which command worked best for him and everyday we practice knocking on the door and teaching him to be calm while we answer it.
