I must heartily disagree with Owlwings. Room temperature varies from house to house and even from room to room. Several winemakers have told us the optimal cellaring temperature for reds like syrah is around 57 degrees. So if you have a bottle in the house and your house is warm (say 72 degrees) there is no harm in giving it a quick chill before opening the bottle and letting it "breathe" a bit, particularly some of the better vintages of red. Not all need to be decanted before serving but if you have a favorite red and want to get the most enjoyment and flavor out of it, decant it and let is sit for about 30 minutes. Just don't serve it at the same chilled temperature as your whites. Chill it, open it, let it breathe a bit then enjoy!

If it's red it should be at room temperature and should have been opened a while before you drink it. If you chill a red wine, you may as well serve any old cheap stuff because you won't taste the difference!
White wine is generally served chilled (but not over chilled).

As a red it should not be served *chilled*, but whether you serve it room temperature or slightly lower is a personal preference.
The French would take it from their cellar (5 or 6 degrees C lower than room temperature) and decant it an hour or more before they drink it. Thus it could still be cooler than room temp but certainly not chilled.

I like white wine chilled, young red wine also chilled, and older (fuller) red wine at room temperature. So I would chill the syrah wine a little.

Reds are normally served at "room temperature", but that idea came into being when rooms were a good deal cooler than they are now. Strive for a temp in the high 50's to low 60's if you can manage it. I don't suggest refrigeration long enough to make the wine noticably cold.

Sryah should always be served room temperature. Red wines are normally served at room temp to bring out the tannins and peppery flavor, along with all the fruity and woody tastes. Hope that helps.

that depends on the situation....not very many wines are good at room temperature...but I would have to say no personally due to the fact it is a rich red wine...serve with a beef dinner and serve chilled (just my opinion though)

You should serve it however you like it. The idea that reds should be served at room temperature is old and outdated. It doesn't apply today. Reds should be slightly chilled. Doublek is correct (see above).

I like all of my wines (red, white, blush) served slightly chilled. Personal preference.
