I'm a liberal married baby boomer with 2 grown sons out on their own, and 2 dogs and 2 cats still hanging around our home. The dogs are a mini dachshund and a pug (so cute!). I live in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. By day I'm an accountant, on nights and weekends I'm any number of things depending on the moment. I'm in the process of redecorating our new home which is great fun. In my scarce spare time I like to read (mainly murder mysterys, thrillers amd really good sci-fi), work on jigsaw puzzles (not the PC kind), sew, make crafts, draw and work in the garden (weather permitting). I also like to play word puzzles on the computer.
Is it better to write off old A/R to bad debts or leave them on A/R?
If you have customers that are 120+ days past due and aren't paying, but might, do you leave them on Accts Receivable or write off to bad debt expense (there is no allowance for doubtful accts on their books)
1 AnswerOther - Business & Finance1 decade agoAfter I remove ceramic tiles from a grouted surface, can I re-use the tiles??
I tiled and grouted a 2'x4'x1/2" piece of fiberboard, but the wood got wet and it warped terribly. The grout is cracked and broken around most of the tiles, so I want to remove them and re-do this project with the right kind of surface. Assuming I get the tiles off without damaging them, how do I remove the grout from the tiles so I can use them again? Or can I?
This was my first tiling project, btw.

1 AnswerOther - Business & Finance1 decade agoHow do I deal with the shallow roots from a neighbor's tree invading my yard?
I think it's a type of birch tree, about 50 ft tall with a canopy of 30 ft maybe (just guessing), and it's right against the fenceline of our yard. It's a beautiful tree, but the shallow roots take up the entire space of yard on one side of our house (the distance from the fence to house is about 10 ft). It's getting very difficult to walk on them and we'd like to dig the roots up and put in some paving stones. Will this kill the tree? If it doesn't kill the tree will the roots just grow back and damage the walkway? Any suggestions??

3 AnswersOther - Holidays1 decade agoDo you need to own your home 2yrs or 5yrs to qualify for tax-free capital gains?
My dad sold his home after living there for 20+ years and bought a condo. 6 months later he sold that condo and bought a bigger condo for slightly more money (no capital gains at all with that sale). He's now lived in this last condo for 2 years but needs to sell it because we have to move him into assisted living. (He's lived by himself for all this time). We were told by his accountant that he would avoid the capital gains tax if he occupied his home for at least 2 years. But I've read some articles that say one has to own the home 5 years and occupy it for 2 of those years. What's the right anwer??
8 AnswersUnited States1 decade agoWhy do askers remove questions after I answer them???
I'll spend five minutes or more on a great answer and when I submit it, I get the message that the asker has removed the question. This irritates the heck out of me! Is it just me or do others feel this way as well?
11 AnswersYahoo Answers1 decade agoWhere can I get ideas for a 1950's retro kitchen remodel?
We just bought a 1951 ranch house and the kitchen needs upgrading, but I want to keep the original 1950's theme. I'm looking for websites, magazines or books with ideas on cabinets, countertops, flooring, appliances, furniture, window treatments and accessories from this era.

Sold house, bought another. Using most of the sale profits as down payment on new house, but keeping about 15k out for furnishings and to pay off car loan. What are the tax implications, both federal and state (Oregon)?
