What's the difference between College/Bachelor/Masters Degree, PhD (am I missing something?)?

I studied Veterinary Medicine in Mexico. It took me 5 years 2 graduate, but I don't have an actual "title" (Sorry, but I have no idea how the thing's called in English), but I DID complete the whole career. I also studied 1 semester of the Veterinary Sciences Master (4 subjects: Genetics, Pathology, etc.). I need 2 know what that makes me... Is it a "college graduate" = College Degree, or Bachelor Degree??? Help! Please!!! THANKS!!!

A bachelors degree is considered undergraduate. It is the first level of college degrees. A Masters degree is a "graduate" degree and is the second level. It is the professional level degree. PhD is a very specialized degree that is usually considered the highest degree possible to attain. It is the "expert" degree. It sounds like you would be considered to have a bachelors degree, and some of the masters program. Go to a US university, apply, and request the transcripts from your university to be sent to that school. They will review them and see what actually qualifies.

In America, you get a degree in steps, the longer you go to school, you'll be able to get more degrees... but it costs more and more.

They are all called college degrees, starting with the first you can get.

    1. 4-6 years of college: Bachelors Degree

    2. 5-8 years or college: Masters Degree

    3. 7-10 years of college: Doctorate Degree (Ph.D.)

When you get a Doctorate degree, you are officially called Doctor, and you usually have to take an oath.

The years I gave you here are all very general. It depends on how quick you finish your classes, and hopefully if you don't flunk any.

It just looks like you have a Bachelors Degree with some very brief Masters level education.

Different countries have reciprocity agreements with each other about education based on the standards that country maintains. Here in the states, what most countries call a college education is equal to our high school education. Some countries where education is more formalize have systems very similar to our (example: Britain) where a college degree is actually a COLLEGE DEGREE.

We have two basic levels of education above college here, a masters degree and the doctorate. Traditionally, a masters is for highly trained people in various technical fields while a doctorate is the level of education one has to teach college in that field. For example, a bachelor degree in engineering (there are several different types) is the standard education needed to work in that field here. Someone who heads a department and is highly paid would have a masters in engineering. The people teaching the college and masters level courses, all have doctorates.

Also, many fields here are highly regulated. It is illegal to practice them without proper licensure. Licensure involves having the appropriate education and often involves passing a specialized test. Two examples are medical doctors and lawyers. Both are doctorate level educations who must then pass special examinations and apply for licensure.

This is important because only some countries educational degrees count toward the requirement for licensure. Veterinary medicine is one of these fields. You need a doctorate to be a vet and you need to be licensed.

What you should do is contact the licensing board in the state you are thinking you might want to practice in and ask them how they view your education in Mexico. Probably, they will accept it, provided you complete the internship phase of that degree here in the US and pass their board examinations.

A college undergraduate degree is a bachelor's--usually completed in four years. A master's degree adds two more years, usually. A doctorate one to three years. If you have your bachelor's degree, you are a college graduate with a college degree.

whew! those are some degree times i've never heard before!

college grad: usually 4-6 years, you get a ba or bs

masters takes 2-3 years after that, you get an ma, ms, mba, etc

    phd takes 4-6 years

and phd's don't have to take an oath.

it sounds to me like you have a bachelor's degree with some master's level education.

In most countries if you go to an accredited school. You recieve a degree.it can be either an Associates Degree or a Bacholers (B.S. or B.A)degree. In Graduate programs you can recieve your Masters,(M.S or M.A) and Ph.D Their are also Doctorite grograms that fall between.

Contact a local College or University. Have them write to your former school and ask for your transscripts. You may not have went to an accredited School but they may be able to give you partial credits to help you get you degree here.

Keep in mind you can not just say you have a degree.in most states you have to be licensed to practice your profession and they will ask for transcripts...As a Hospice Pastor I do counsiling work and that required me to obtain a license from the state so I had to produce my transscripts and they were verified before I could start my job.

What is the title in Spanish? I imagine that if you did 5 years after the Mexican equivalent of High School, you probably have a Bachelor Degree.
